Demi Lovato resorted to cutting and eating disorders because she was relentlessly reviled and bullied as a child. Not everyone cuts (and actually, most people don't) because they don't feel loved. People also cut because they may need to make sure they can feel in general, or they do it to release pressure. I, being a recovering cutter, used to cut so I could be in control of something. I won't give details, but a lot what was going on that I had no control over, and there was also the, "I need to feel something that I know is not a lie." And there were other things. Not everyone cuts for specifically one reason. Cutting is a serious result of depression, and it should not be referred to as "idiotic" or "unreasonable" simply because it does not help the situation at hand. If you know someone who is cutting themselves, you need to let them know you're there for them. Don't rat them out or anything, because it just doesn't work that way. Talk to them, and help them. Let them know they have someone that's on their side. Don't tell them what to do to make it better, just be there. Really, the keyword is: LISTEN. Listen to them, even if they don't have anything to say. Listening is the ultimate bandage.
