Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange was hospitalized this weekend after a suicide attempt at his apartment in which he stabbed himself nine times. Lange sustained six “hesitation wounds” and three deep plunges. His mother called police Saturday morning after coming to his home to drop off from food, only to enter and find her son bloodied after his attempt. He was then transported to a hospital where surgeons were able to save him despite heavy bleeding.
Per NYPost:
“We all have our demons,” Stern said on-air this week, referring to Lange’s past battles with addiction. “Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He’s a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don’t forget how great he is.”
Lange has openly discussed his longtime problems with substance abuse for years, and has been absent from Stern’s Sirius radio show for the past month. On Monday’s show, Stern said Lange isn’t leaving the show and called him “a tremendous contributor.” In December, Lange announced a hiatus from performing, stating that he needed to “try and get my head straight.” after a judge revoked his driving privileges for seven months in September when he admitted he was under the influence of prescribed sleeping pills in a minor traffic accident. This isn’t Langes’ first attempt at suicide – The comedian wrote in his recent biography that he tried to kill himself once before, that time with a drug overdose.
All the best to you, Artie! Please get well and get the help you need.
