Tiger Woods woke up today a free man. Woods and his divorce from wife Elin Nordegren is now final and official. And that roaring applause you heard Monday was waitresses and porn stars across the world rejoicing that Woods is a single man again. Their divorce comes 9 months after his middle-of-the night car crash outside his home set off revelations that the world’s most famous athlete had been cheating on his wife, setting off a chain of events that included a visit to a sex-addiction clinic, a golf hiatus, and multiple mea culpas from Woods.
Per TMZ:
Elin’s lawyers released the following statement on behalf of the couple: “We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future.”
The statement continues, “While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us. Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future well-being. The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them as we adjust to a new family situation, which is why our privacy must be a principal concern.”
Woods’ divorce from his now ex-wife Elin Maria Pernilla Nordegren – her maiden name was restored by the divorce – happened so quickly that they were long gone by the time the media set up in front of the courthouse. Nordegren had filed the petition for the divorce and both waived a 20-day delay period in order to finalize the divorce immediately. Terms of the divorce were not disclosed and they will almost certainly remain a tightly guarded secret as Nordegren likely traded her silence for cash. They will share custody of their two children, with both filing documentation showing they had completed a four-hour parenting course.
