Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview – The Parlotones

From their origins in Johannesburg, South Africa, the rock 4-piece known as The Parlotones have achieved multi-platinum-selling status with their darkly romantic lyrics, atmospheric pop structures, and ambitious live shows that have earned them rave response from fans and critics alike. They will release their U.S. debut album, “Stardust Galaxies,” featuring the lead single “Life Design,” on Tuesday, September 14th. The South African rock 4-piece – which has achieved multi-platinum status in their home country, selling more records than Coldplay, The Killers, and Oasis combined – will support their North American debut by joining Blue October on tour September 17th through October 10th.

The release of Stardust Galaxies follows on the heels of a featured performance in the ABC Music Lounge, and an iTunes “Video of the Week” feature for their 2010 SAMA Music Video of the Year, “Push Me to the Floor.” The album marks the U.S. introduction of a group that has spent the last 18 months on a sold-out, 300-date world tour, packing out 1000+ capacity venues in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Russia, and the UK. Most recently, the band performed in front of a global audience of over 1 billion viewers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Celebration Concert.

Stardust Galaxies’s lead single, “Life Design,” serves as an “ode to those who have created success despite adversity,” says The Parlotones’s front man, Kahn Morbee. “It’s a celebration of those people who have an innate exuberance for life, and pursue the betterment of their own lives and the lives of those around them.”

The band practice what they preach, having become activists against two of the most deadly epidemics in their home country of South Africa: AIDS and malaria. The band has raised funds for The StarFish Foundation and performed at a number of AIDS awareness concerts, including POSI+IVE Rocks. Each year, The Parlotones speak at grade schools in South Africa, educating younger generations on AIDS prevention, and donate all revenue from on-site performances back to the schools themselves for facility renovation and community development. The band also champions for United Against Malaria, an initiative which is attempting to eradicate malaria in Africa.

Now reaching the ears – and minds – of stateside listeners, the band hopes their music can entertain while also providing lyrical insights into the stories, and social and political struggles, of their homeland.

Examples include track 9, “Brighter Side of Hell,” which focuses on the socioeconomic disparity between have and have-nots of their home town. Of the song, Morbee says, ”It’s a bittersweet reflection on Johannesburg. It’s our home and it’s often depicted as a sort of hell. The song emphasizes that although there are problems, there is a bright side and a bright future for the city. We love Johannesburg despite of – and because of – its weird and wonderful imperfections.”

Track 3, “Should We Fight Back,” was inspired by Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom.” “It’s a book I discovered whilst on tour in South Africa, “says Morbee, “and it made me realize the harsh historical climate we once lived in and how close we were to disaster.”

The South African natives have weaved themselves into the fabric of their home country’s history with performances at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration of Jacob Zuma, Africa Day, Live Earth, and a record-breaking show at the Dome in Johannesburg, where they wrote their own piece of African history by becoming the first South African band to ever headline the venue.

I had the chance to ask Kahn Morbee about things such as breaking into the music industry, musical pet-peeves, and artists he’d love to work with. You can read about that below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music, and what sparked that interest?

I’ve had an interest in music since I was a young boy. I would perform in musicals, constantly sing and would often take songs I like and change the lyrics but still keep the melody. The interest was sparked primarily by my surroundings. My entire family was very into music, not necessarily as musicians but just as avid lovers of music.

How would you describe the sound of your music, and how do you feel your music is different from others in your genre?

We’re not purists so our music is ultimately a result of the music we digest which ranges from gentle singer/songwriter stuff, to POP, to electronica, to heavy rock, to metal, to Indie. I guess at the core we’re a melodic rock band with POP sensibilities.

How did you break into the music industry?

We never really ‘broke’ into the industry, that expression gives (at least me) the impression that it was one sudden moment and viola we were in. We played and toured and did everything to get noticed and just kept working on that momentum. It’s been a long process, but thankfully a long process brings with it a certain substance and level of experience.

What are some of your short term and long term goals? What are your plans for promoting your music and upcoming album in the US?

Our short term goals are to tour the world and start work on a new album, the long term goal is ultimately to remain the same four guys touring the world, creating music that is relevant and enjoy doing it. We ultimately want longevity and we want to keep being creative. We will be touring the US in September and October and will constantly be returning in 2011.

Was there ever a time where you felt like giving up music or quitting on your way to where you are now?

Never.

Do you have any musical pet-peeves?

The exclusivity and judgment that comes from certain corners of the music population. Music may not always pander to peoples tastes but it does irk me when people will spend hours ranting about how much they ‘hate’ something instead of focusing on what they like.

Besides music, what are some of your hobbies? What do you do to keep yourself grounded?

I have and still play a lot of sport; I used to play rugby, cricket and soccer bnut have very little time to play in their traditional formats so now I play; indoor soccer, tennis, squash and golf. I love the usual things like reading and film as well.

What do you miss most, besides family and friends, when you are out traveling?

I think I sort of miss the comforts of being at home, things like; routine, my own bed, relaxing. When you’re on tour you’re always stimulated as a result of your surroundings and its quite difficult to step out and unwind.

What is one accomplishment you hope to make above all others in your life and your career?

To be the first South African band that truly as worldwide recognition and leave a legacy in our own country.

Who are some of your musical influences, and who are some artists you would love to work with?

The Smiths, The cure, R.E.M, INXS, Waterboys, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Queen, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, these were the bands that made me fall in love with music and want to be in a band. If I list all the bands I love I may need to type a novel.

What drives you the most to do what you love? What inspires you?

I think I’m driven by the fact that I want to remain doing what I love. Life is short, why pursue anything else, why pursue something you hate? Inspiration comes from those that have achieved great things and from Life itself, the experience of living is quite inspirational. It’s never always up but it’s about collecting a plethora of memories and experiences that allow you to reflect and say I’ve actually ‘LIVED’ life not just ‘EXISTED’

What is your favorite song on your upcoming album and why?

It changes from time to time, at the moment I enjoy playing ‘ we call this dancing’ because live it’s a lot of fun and exudes a positive message.

What sort of feelings do you hope your fans will have from listening to your upcoming album?

The aim was to try and mirror the human experience, which is ultimately a mix of highs and lows, moments of what seems like endless love and heartache, nostalgia, moments to dance and times to soothe the soul. The album will touch on the melancholic and reach highs but ultimately I hope the album makes people optimistic about the concept of life and offers a bit of escapism.

Lady Gaga Shows Off Meat Bikini on Vogue Japan Cover

PETA isn’t going to be happy with this, kittens.

Lady Gaga has stripped down once again to her, um, flesh. The latest issue of Vogue Hommes Japan features Gaga on the cover clad only in a meat bikini.

Via The New York Daily News:

Though Gaga, 24, has yet to comment on her eyebrow-raising photo shoot, it’s not a surprise that PETA is none too pleased with her new look.

“Oh, Lady Gaga’s job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body,” PETA’s President, Ingrid Newkirk, told the Daily News.

Oh boy! Looks like Gaga’s got some ‘splainin to do!!

What do you think? Is this really more shocking than her AK-47 bra she wore on Rolling Stone?

Emma Watson: ‘We’re Not Selling Sex’

I adore Emma Watson, but she might face a backlash after dolling out a comment. OK! reports that Emma felt the Twilight series was living on sexual tension despite Edward’s Jonas Brother Purity Power.

“This kiss between Hermione and Ron is highly anticipated, it’s been building up for eight films now. And Harry Potter is not Twilight, you know; we’re not selling sex. So, whenever there is any hint of that, everybody gets terribly excited. In fact, it was horribly awkward; we couldn’t stop laughing.”

While I am a Team Harry Potter, I think you are comparing works that aren’t even in the same field. From a literary stand point the HP series packs far more detail, planning, imagination, vision, thought, growth and respectability than a vampire who sparkles in the sunlight and has to protect his mortal love interest from a another sparklepire and then another sparklepire and then an army of sparklepires.

From a selling standpoint, Twilight might have the edge as tween girls are not yet jaded by how disappointing men really are. I don’t think they are selling sex so much as surviving on sexual tension to make it interesting as the same plot is recycled for 4 books. Comparing Harry Potter and Twilight is like comparing a notebook with Mrs.Cullen scribbled all over it to The Mona Lisa. (Que tweens and incoherent bashing in 3…2…1..)

Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview with Signed CD and Poster GIVEAWAY – Brendan James

Despite the title of his new single “The Fall,” soulful singer-songwriter Brendan James is definitely on the rise. After releasing his acclaimed debut “The Day is Brave” in 2008, Brendan, a native of New Hampshire, signed with Universal/Decca Records. Now, he is ready to release his self-titled sophomore effort on September 7th. He says of the record: “The album is self-titled because I feel like it’s my first recording that really showcases the different sides of me as a musician. It’s got everything from the mellow to the upbeat, to the somber to the unabashedly positive… I have a lot of different sides and I wanted to make sure my music reflected that.”

While the new album keeps the spotlight on Brendan’s emotionally resonant voice and expressive piano-playing (the legendary Carly Simon describes him as having “a voice that can change the world”), he and producer Warren Huart (Augustana, the Fray) added in musical textures like synths, strings, and even drum loops to keep things interesting. The romantic first single “The Fall” is an excellent showcase of all that Brendan has to offer. The music video was directed by friend and actor Justin Baldoni, and stars Melissa Ordway of The Last Song and Melrose Place, along with Greek’s Amber Stevens. Watch it here to experience Brendan for yourself, and listen for Brendan’s track “The Lucky One” in the trailer for new Sony film “How Do You Know,” starring Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson, and Reese Witherspoon.

Brendan’s album is available for pre-order now on iTunes, but until then he is offering a free download of song “Stupid For Your Love” on his website, at BrendanJames.com/FreeDownload. Stay tuned to the site for all the latest updates!

I had the chance to speak with Brendan about things such as his interest in music, his upcoming album, and what keeps him grounded. You can read about that below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music and what sparked that interest?

My first real memory of knowing that i loved singing, was in first grade, when i sang in a school production of “Babushka”. I remember practicing my solo all day and night around my house. It wasn’t until i was 19 though, that I learned piano and started writing my own songs.

How did you break into the music industry?

I broke in through New York City. I moved there, hit the open mic scene, found a manager, made tons of demos… and when the demo’s stopped sucking, I got signed to Capitol Records.

How would you describe the sound of your music, and what makes you feel that your upcoming album is different from your first?

The sound of my new album is brighter and more up beat. It was a lot of fun spreading my wings a bit, experimenting with different styles and sides of myself. Albums should catalog the range of stages artists slip through in life. This one speaks to the one i was in directly after touring 16 months straight.

What are some of your plans for promoting your album?

Hitting the internet with a vengeance, touring til I’m blue in the face, pitching songs to tv and film, living on a prayer that radio in this country is still worth a damn.

What are some of your short term and long term goals that you have lined out for yourself?

Short term goal is to tour the world on the shoulders of a Grammy nominated album. Long term goal is to live a full and happy life, making music, babies, and photographs.

Have you written or created a song that didn’t make an album cut that you wished would have?

Yeah, I wrote a song called ‘Monday Calls’ last year, attempted production on it with 2 different producers, and watched it fall to the wayside just as final tracks were being selected. Its hard to describe how that happens sometimes. But all i can say is that, though artists don’t often admit it, albums are the sum of many people’s hard work, and of many people’s trusted opinions.

Do you have any musical pet peeves?

Tough question, kinda bugs me when solo performers base their whole show on looping their guitar. Only works if you’re REALLY good at I think.

Besides music, what are some of your favorite things to do? What keeps you grounded?

Anything in nature grounds me. While touring for example, I try to spend almost every minute of downtime out in the woods or by the ocean. It keeps me calm and inspired. Of course it does.

What do you miss most, besides family and friends, while you are out traveling and playing?

Right now i miss my dog, Rubi, like crazy. She’s the sh*t. But i also miss that feeling of ‘nothing to do and nowhere to be’ that is nearly impossible to find on the road. NO matter how many hours or days off you have, there’s always another.

What is one accomplishment you hope to make above all others in your life and career?

To be a good person.

Ok Brendan James fans! Here is your chance to score a free SIGNED copy of Jame’s new album along with a poster! Simply post your favorite Brendan James song and why you love it in the comment section below and one lucky person will win! Contest ends September 17th. Good luck!

Wyclef Jean Accuses Sean Penn of Cocaine Addiction

An all out bitch fight has broken out between Wyclef Jean and Sean Penn. Meh. Why not.

It all started when Wyclef Jean wanted to run for President of Haiti. He was born in the now earthquake ravaged land and suddenly felt he should return to run the country. The former Fugee crooner was snubbed and Sean Penn spat some shiz about Jean being too busy silently counting his rubies and playing Halo to give a toss about Haiti. (Click HERE to read Sean’s exact words.)

Wyclef then retorted via his song “If I Was President”…

“If I was president. I got a message for Sean Penn, maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti cuz he was too busy sniffing cocaine. I got a message for Praswell, even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you. Even though you only kicked eight bars for the Fugees. If I was president.”

Obviously that didn’t sit well with Penn and he decided to respond in an interpretive song of his own (not really), but got distracted by a Russain hooker (probably). Instead his rep issued a statement that points out Sean couldn’t be on coke because it would “deplete his body’s immune system.” (Really.)

“Mr. Jean is clearly unfamiliar with the physical demands put upon volunteers in Haiti. As aid workers there, the notion of depleting the body’s immune system thru the use of illicit drugs is ludicrous. More specifically, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (a.k.a. JPHRO) has a ZERO tolerance policy for any and all illegal drugs. As the leader of this organization, Sean Penn has not only set this policy, but adheres to it. That Mr. Jean would make such a false accusation is reckless and saddening, but not surprising.”

Because they both strike me as they type to spend hours googling their name…Hi Sean. Good afternoon Wyclef.

Robert Pattinson to Guest Star on ‘Entourage’

Robert Pattinson is going to take a break from his brooding and tortured soul face to give us some comedy. The ‘Twilight’ star will be guest starring as a male Mariah Carey on “Entourage.”

“ Mrs. Ari is still fuming over Ari’s angry meltdown the night before, Ari tries desperately to keep her surprise party on track. The guys attempt to stage an intervention for Vince, who has gone off the deep end. Turtle scrambles to find investors to save the tequila business. Eric receives an unexpected request from Terrance McQuewick, which leads him to consider Scott’s business proposal. Robert Pattinson guest stars as Ari’s most difficult client ever.”

Kellan Lutz Angry Over Animal Cruelty Video On YouTube

A shocking and heartbreaking video of a giggling teenage girl hurling six puppies into a raging river in Bosnia made its way onto YouTube (it has since, thankfully, been pulled!), and now Kellan Lutz is speaking out about his anger and disgust over the video that has attracted international attention for the viciousness of her act, taking to Twitter to express his views.

Per Us:

“What is going on with the search for the girl throwing the puppies into the river?” Lutz, 25, tweeted Sunday. “I’ve never been so disgusted before. That video is so incredibly disturbing and plain out wrong.”

Lutz also praised “Transformer’s” Michael Bay for offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the teenager throwing the puppies.

“Heard Michael Bay put up a bounty for her or info leading to her arrest. Thank you for that, and everyone who is not standing for this. That cruelty and any cruelty to animals helpless or not is unacceptable. I can’t get the crying puppies out of my head.”

The Bosnian girl has been identified by police and faces up to $6,4000 in fines, thanks to a new animal protection law. The name of the girl, who is a juvenile, has not been released. But she was found after tips were received from animal protection groups in the country. Lutz couldn’t be happier, responding to the incident.

“I’m so happy that she has been found and even more grateful for the new law! Thank you all for taking a stand and using your voices against such actions as this. You all are my heroes!”

Lutz has been very active in the animal community. He’s made no secret about his love for animals, especially dogs. He has been pictured with his rescued dog Kola in PETA advertisements encouraging people to adopt a dog from animal shelters. It’s great when celebrities take a personal interest in charities and causes that need a face. Lutz is doing that for animal rights.

Fashion Trends – Would You Wear It: Menswear

Menswear hasn’t been limited to the male crowd for decades. Designers like Coco Chanel brought the comfort of menswear into what women wear with fabrics and less constrained clothing. Yves Saint Laurent also helped popularized trousers for women. So it is no surprise this trend keeps resurfacing.

Hollyood Dame: I am blessed with extreme curves and often can’t wear the menswear trend as it doesn’t compliment my thunderous thighs. However, this fall you will see another wave of menswear inspirations on the racks. Despite the focal point being your curvy hips this season, menswear bottoms will be haute. Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger and BCBG Max Azria all cranked out looks that embrace comfort and tapered trend. Need something a bit more affordable? Express has also embraced the collision of men’s style for ladies.
