Chris Brown Gets High Marks From Judge

Chris Brown seems to be taking care of business when it comes to his attempt in making up for his charges of assault on Rihanna. He was sentenced to 5 years probation and six months community labor last year. At the most recent progress hearing, Judge Patricia Schnegg spoke very highly of his commitment.

Per MTV:

“Of all probationers I’ve ever had, and I’ve had thousands of probationers, no one has ever done a better or more consistent job than you have,” Schnegg said. “And I really want to commend you for taking responsibility, and for actually working diligently to complete all of the things the court has required of you.”

The Los Angeles Superior Court Judge announced that Brown is close to completing his anger management courses and has 73 of his 180 days of community service completed. Brown has been doing graffiti removal and roadside clean up as part of his service in his home state of Virginia. He has to check into the LA County courts periodically for updates on his progress but so far so good.

Kudos to you, Chris. While I don’t approve of his actions in the past, it’s nice to see he’s taking the steps forward to turn his life around.

New Music Friday – J. Lewis

It can be tough to stand out from the crowd in Hollywood’s cutthroat entertainment industry, but J.Lewis – with his impressive resume of talents and accomplishments – is making his mark with the release of his latest single “Shut ‘Em Up.”

J.Lewis grew up in a Dallas, Texas suburb surrounded by a variety of musical influences, everyone from Steely Dan, the Beatles and Jack Johnson to Prince and his number one inspiration, Michael Jackson. An athlete in high school, J decided his real passion lay in dance, trading in the locker room for the hardwood floors and mirrors of an urban dance studio. By age 17 he was headed to Hollywood, hoping to break into music by way of the dance industry. “I just didn’t want to be auditioning for other people’s videos,” J quickly realized. “I wanted to be making the video.”

Pursuing this path included waiting tables as he paid dues, honing his songwriting craft, taking vocal coaching and learning new instruments besides guitar. Three years of working the Hollywood music scene finally paid off in 2008, when one of his many showcases at venues like The Viper Room, The Roxy and The Hotel Cafe led to a production deal with Blackground/Interscope Records. A track he recorded with FloRida recently made the rounds of the internet, but J is ready to rocket up the charts with the groove-worthy track “Shut ‘Em Up.” Watch the video here, and visit JLewisOnline.com for all the latest info.

Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson Marriage Troubles?!

NY Daily is reporting that Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson’s marriage is on the rocks. The report attributes Scarlett’s SNL appearance as their source of trouble. The curvy actress hosted Saturday Night Live and wanted Ryan to make an appearance. He snubbed the opportunity to be on the show and with his wife and hit up Soho House instead.

“In October 2009, Johansson put in a surprise “SNL” appearance when Reynolds was the show’s guest host. Though we hear producers were interested in having the upcoming “Green Lantern” star make a similar cameo, Reynolds declined, saying he planned to attend the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s” benefit at the Waldorf instead.

It turned out Reynolds wasn’t even in New York that night, (though he taped a video for the Fox fund-raiser). Another insider saw him at Soho House in Los Angeles, and “Millionaire Matchmaker” Patti Stanger tweeted that she’d met Reynolds at the club that evening.”

I doubt that the fate of their entire marriage rested on one evening. Reps also dismissed the reports and stated that the couple was doing just find and there were no troubles. File this one under reaching-for-gossip-because-its-Friday.

Justin Bieber has a Flirting Coach

Is this legal? Justin Bieber has a man that teaches him how to flirt. Basically The Biebs has his very own ‘Hitch’ and this guy teaches him how to strut his pull-ups. (Click HERE for that…)

“The 16-year-old ‘Baby’ singer reportedly has an advisor called Ryan who tells him how to act in order to impress the public and how to present himself to members of the opposite sex.

A source told Lifeandstyle.com (via Contact Music): “Ryan shows him how to walk, how to talk, how to flirt, even how to wear his hat to attract as many girls as possible.”

This just creeps me out. I am guessing this guy also flat irons his hair and makes choo choo noises while feeding him oatmeal in the morning. All celebs go through some sort of PR boot camp, but this is ridiculous.

‘Your Highness’ Trailer- NSFW

The trailer for “Your Highness” has hit. Warning: It’s NSFW…

The film is being pegged as the next “Hangover.” It stars Danny McBride as a lazy prince who goes on a quest with his brother, played by James Franco, to rescue the virginal princess and save their father’s kingdom. The R-rated comedy also features Natalie Portman in a thong. Huzzah for all those who would find that titillating.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ Reviews

It is finally November 19th and Harry Potter fans are finally getting to see the final installment of the saga. ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ was one of the most anticipated books as well as one of the top selling books. (8.3 million copies in 24 hours. Just for comparison…’Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ sold 1.3 million copies in 24 hours.) The weight of bringing the much adored book to life on film rested in the hands of David Yates. The pressure to do J.K. Rowling’s work justice along with delivering a package suitable for children and still pleasing to adults must have been crushing. At midnight last night (technically early this morning) the first showing opened to eager fans. So what is the verdict?

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ reviews are mostly positive. Most negative reviews surround the question of the film’s suitability for children. The heavy nature of the context of the books speaks for itself. I am guessing that those who have read the books will have to make a judgment call knowing what is in store for the wizarding trio. The film was given a PG-13 rating.

Rotten Tomatoes has the rating hovering around the 76% approval mark as of this Friday morning. (This will fluctuate as more reviews surface.) Critics are giving the 2 and a half hour film a 7.3 out of 10 rating while 90% audience members weighing in give it a solid approval. One factor that remains undisputed is the film’s animated telling of ‘The Three Brothers’ which explains the title of the film and ultimately plays a large role in the very end. Everyone is giving the segment praise.

Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t know which had the greater effect: my real melancholy at the thought of looming finality, or the elegance of this necessarily dark and serious penultimate film, in which characters/actors we have watched since childhood are now resourceful young adults. But I do know I felt a swell of love and awe wash over me from the very first wickedly creepy scene until the profoundly moving last one.”

New York Times: “While there is still one more film to go (Part 2 is scheduled for release in July), this one manages to be both a steppingstone and a reasonably satisfying experience in its own right. Some plot elements are handled with busy, “DaVinci Code”-like mumbo jumbo as the three friends must hunt down not only a bunch of horcruxes, but also the mysterious objects alluded to in the title. The deathly hallows at least provide the occasion for a lovely animated sequence, much as the inevitable preliminary battle scenes allow for episodes of explosive wand work. Even though it ends in the middle, “Deathly Hallows: Part 1” finds notes of anxious suspense and grave emotion to send its characters, and its fans, into the last round. ”

Washington Post: “‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1′ can’t be anything but unsatisfying. As the first part of the last movie in a 10-year franchise that has taken on almost theological meaning for a generation of readers and filmgoers, it’s meant to leave audiences wanting more. It’s half of a really good movie, full of the enchantment, emotion and incident for which the Potter series has become so fanatically cherished.” – 3 out of 4 Stars

The NY Post wasn’t so kind…“While this is no doubt a solid business decision and may well please devotees who demand extreme fidelity to Rowling’s text, I suspect many of my fellow Muggles will join me in checking their watches at regular intervals during this extremely s-l-o-w movie. Beautifully shot but a soulless cash machine, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” delivers no dramatic payoff, no resolution and not much fun. Hopefully we’ll get that in the final installment next summer.

I am guessing the critic at the NY Post has not picked up the book. If he would have, then perhaps he wouldn’t have expected to see something “fun.” Last I checked the title was ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ not “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure at Hogwarts.” The thing about this series is it’s details and information. It’s not a written work that is easy by any means easy to bring to film in a package under 3 hours. It isn’t muscley shirtless teens running around with pale and brooding boys who shop at Hot Topic and wear Armani Exchange. Potter isn’t about sex appeal/puppy love, nor does it need explosions and machine guns to keep you enthralled because there is an actual story with an insane amount of details, thought and planning beyond who has what super power.

There is a reason it is the second highest grossing film series (#1 is the Star Wars series). Even the 23 films of James Bond pales in comparison. I digress. I think the critic at USA Today put it best…

“Menacing and meditative, Hallows is arguably the best installment of the planned eight-film franchise, though audiences who haven’t kept up with previous chapters will be hopelessly lost.”

The film is for those who have actually picked up a book from the series. Directors of the previous films were forced to leave out vital characters (who were so prominent and now pivotal in the books), details and events. That vital information fell to the cutting room floor in the interest of time, so it’s no surprise some moviegoers will be lost. I’d say that the real treat is obviously the books. Hate to read? Get the books on CD or download them to your iPod. Listen to them in the car on the way to the grocery or working out. Jim Dale, the man who read the audio entire series, did an impeccable job. You will see that the films are great but are nothing compared to Rowling’s actual story of Harry Potter.

Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview – Bellevoxx

Famed baseball player Frank Thomas has launched record label W2W Records through Fontana Distribution, a division of Universal Music Group, and his debut act, Bellevoxx, is seeing its first music video on AOL. The band’s name literally translates to the phrase “beautiful voice,” which perfectly describes the three-part girl group consisting of Denisse, Harmony and Raquel.

First single “Looking for Love,” tells the story of the everyday girls’ problems finding the right guy. The reason is because she has been looking for her soul mate in all of the wrong places. The single is available on iTunes now and blends a pop song with dance vibes and some reggae undertones mixed in as the three girls take turns singing and harmonizing on the track.

The Las Vegas-based trio has seen praise from online publications like the Las Vegas Examiner, who described “Looking for Love” as a song that “makes you want to hear more from these ladies.” Melismatic describes Bellevoxx’s unique characteristics by stating, “their positive energy is what sets them apart as the group candidly states their three members balance each other out emotionally and are striving to create something that young women can relate and look up to.”

“I relate everything to baseball with these ladies,” says Thomas. “You’ve got three first round draft picks…very heavy hitters.”

Each Bellevoxx girl has had previous musical stints and jobs leading them to this ultimate pairing under Frank Thomas and W2W Records’ guidance. Denisse Lara won the Latin version of “Star Search” (“Quiero ser estrella”) in 1997, and her voice was heard in the title song “One” from “Pokemon: The Movie.” She found animation again in the Spanish language version of “The Little Mermaid” sequel voicing Melody. Harmony Moniz has worked as a professional model with companies like Model Mayhem, as well as gigs acting and singing. After high school, Raquel Houghton moved to Los Angeles and joined pop group The Valli Girls. The quintet performed one song on “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” soundtrack and another for the annual Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards show.

I had the chance to ask the girls of Bellevoxx some questions recently about things such as what sparked their interest in music, what inspires them, and their goals. You can read about those below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music and what sparked that interest?

Dennise: My sister started singing at a young age, and I always wanted to emulate her.. She soon found a different hobby however I continued practicing and realized this was my calling.

Raquel: I knew I loved to sing and perform when I was about 6 years old. My mom put The Little Mermaid in and I was hooked. I memorized that entire movie and watched it repeatedly! Couldn’t get that Ariel’s voice out of my head.

Harmony: I realized I had interest in music when i was 3. It began with dancing, but singing followed soon after. My dad use to sing to me, and started putting the microphone in my hand to sing along, and I was hooked. My first singing performance was “Tomorrow” from the musical Annie when I was 4.

What drives and inspires you to do what you love?

Dennise: The rewarding sound of a finished record!! When you’re able to touch a person with the conviction of your voice and lyrics it makes all the hard work and effort worthwhile!

Raquel: I have always been very driven because of my upbringing. I grew up in a single parent household and knew money was tight. I always said I would take care of my family when I was older. Singing not only gave me the vehicle to express myself but an opportunity to give back to my family. They are the most important thing to me.

Harmony: I have always been a naturally driven person. While my friends were at parties and planning their weekends, I was at home writing lyrics and doing vocal warm ups. I was always more interested in my career than normal life; I never wanted to be a “regular” girl. I have my mind set on a career in music, and will not settle for anything less.

Do you find it easy to sing and perform? Does it come naturally for you?

Denisse: I find it natural to sing, literally it’s like I’m breathing!! I used to get yelled at “can you stop singing already!!!” sometimes I don’t even realize I’m doing it. It’s become second nature!

Raquel: I absolutely love to sing and perform! I used to put on impromptu shows for my mom and my sister growing up. I would make them grade me. I was kind of obsessed with getting a great score! I get such a liberating feeling when I sing. Music has helped me through a lot in my life.

Harmony: Performing has always been second nature for me. The stage is home. It is literally one of my favorite places in the world. Im sure many other performers have said this, and it is no different for me..It’s as if I am one person off stage, and transform the moment I step foot on stage. Everything is gone from my mind except the music. Its such a surreal moment, and I never want it to end. When I use to perform in my performing arts high school, I hated the intermissions. I was always so ancy to get back up there and perform.

Besides music, what are some of your favorite things to do?

Denise: That’s easy I’m devoted to songwriting and composing music! It’s an equal passion of mine as singing. Harmonies are my favorite but beyond the creative process I thrive on the feeling, the way I’m moved when I get to listen back!

Raquel: I LOVE anything having to do with the outdoors. It is an incredible feeling to stand on top of a cliff overlooking a beautiful endless ocean like I did in Costa Rica, where I was born. Also on my list of favorite pastimes are air hockey, word games, hiking and playing sports.

Harmony: I like to bowl. No one believes me when I say that, but its true. I actually use to be on a bowling league when I was younger haha.
I also love spending time with my family and dogs ( I have two chihuahuas, Karisma and Ferbie). Even if were not doing anything, I love just knowing they are in the same house as me..theres something comforting in that. We have movie nights, and karaoke nights..I really look forward to those.

If you had the chance to work or record with anyone, who would you choose?

Denisse: I would be honored to work with Kara DioGuardi! The industries best kept secret, besides David Foster my ultimate musical teacher! I would love for her to take me under her wings and show me the ropes of the music world and teach me everything I have yet to learn!

Raquel: I adore Gwen Stefani. She is such an incredible talent. She can write, which is something I love to do and perform like a superstar.
I also LOVE Shania Twain. She is beautiful and sings from the heart. I feel her emotions when she sings. Im a big fan.

Harmony: I love to write, so it would be a dream to work with Diane Warren. She is brilliant!! Ive always been a fan of Britney Spears as well, so working with her would be amazing.

How would you describe the sound of your music?

Denisse: We try to make our sound as universal as possible. Our genre is pop, r&b contemporary. Collectively there are many elements to our sound capturing different demographics and audiences!

Raquel: I like to say the sound of BelleVoxx is a mixture of pure pop, funk, some soul and 100% from our hearts. We love what we do!

Harmony: Our music is funky pop with a touch of soul. Its very easy to sing along to, and stays in your head.

How do you feel that you’re different from other artists in your genre?

Denisse: We are different because we are a multi-genre and multi-cultured group. Our background influences our preference in music and sound. Making each song in the album a different flavor for every taste!

Raquel: We work hard but have so much fun doing it. The three of us respect each other and love being creative together. We love to experiment with different sounds. I think it keeps it interesting!

Harmony: We are fresh. Its a new sound to bring to the table. The vibe we play off of with each other is magical. Theres been many female groups in existence, but usually they have a lead singer, and the others are backups. In our case, we are all leads. We can all sing, dance, and have personality. I believe thats what makes us so powerful together. Each of us alone is strong, but together is unstoppable.

What are some of your short-term and long-term goals you have lined out for yourself?

Dennise: All my goals are long term. Through music I want to contribute a helping hand to those in need and bring change, dedicate myself to improve the well being of Latin America countries the poor and hungry! I realized for most, food is a luxury and if I can help one person it’ll bring further meaning into my life and lives of others! Also I would love to aid struggling musicians provide them with the tools necessary to accomplish their tasks! Artist development is key to a long successful career!

Raquel: Short term goals: Figure out a schedule that is longer than a week! Long Term goals: We are striving to achieve longevity in this business. We want to tour and see different kinds of cultures all over the world. Touching people with our music around the globe is a dream of mine

Harmony: Short term: clear my head! haha. My mind never stops running, I’m always thinking about what I have to do, what I’ve already done, what i want to do, and what I need to do. I would love to just shut it down sometimes. Long term: I want to travel the world. I want to see everything God has created, and learn about every culture. I want to create music that will last a lifetime, and write lyrics that will help people get through hard times, or embrace happy times. I would also love to be in a position of financial power one day so that I can help provide for third world countries. It would be an honor to hand helpless families shoes, jackets, food, etc. I want to make a difference… change things.

What are your upcoming plans for promoting your music?

Denisse: We will be releasing singles this next quarter. Creating a buzz is everything continual performances and interviews are in the agenda these next few months! Woo hoo!!

‘American Idol’ Makes More Changes

The judges won’t be the only thing different in the upcoming season of ‘American Idol‘ on Fox. In September, Idol announced that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler signed on to fill two of the empty judge seats on the show. You would think the new Judges would be all the talk for the new season of American Idol, which kicks off January 12th on Fox, but there are bigger changes coming to this season – Call it a bit of a facelift or make over for it’s 10th season. According to executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, contestants will be faced with a series of new challenges. Think American Idol meets NBC’s ‘The Apprentice.’ Lythgoe wants to better prepare the contestants for the music industry and will be having them compete in weekly challenges. Contestants will see who can make the best music videos and promote themselves and a they will have a chance to work with a band and dancers for an awards show-style performance. Hmmmm! This could be interesting!

Per MTV:

The biggest tweak, however, has to do with the mechanics of the show — namely, the elimination of the round of 24 that shrinks the cast down to the final 12. “I didn’t think [the top 24] were very good, I was bored with them by the time they got there,” Lythgoe said. It was not specified, however, if the adjustment means that judges will pick the top 12 or what will replace the shows that formerly made up the early audience voting rounds.

To be honest with you, I’m sort of interested in this new Idol. Seeing contestants perform and then put their ability to survive the tough music industry seems like it could be pretty entertaining. So with all of the tweaks that they are making would you be more likely to watch the new season now? I may have to check it out.
