Imagine, if you will, what the worst day of Lady Gaga’s life might have been like. Maybe her MTV meat dress dried up into jerky. Maybe she forgot to leave the house without pants. Or maybe she lost one of her crazy hats. Nope – and as she makes perfectly clear in her new video “Marry the Night” that none of the above happened.
Lady Gaga’s latest music video debuted recently, and as Gaga had been teasing in the weeks before its arrival, depicts “one of the worst days of her life.” Mother Monster takes a bizarre trip to the hospital, performs ballet, dyes her hair, writhes naked in a bathtub like a scalded mermaid and dance, dance, dances in her new 14 minute video. The actual song doesn’t start until about the 8 minute mark in the video. Before that, Gaga does voice over for what are supposed to be semi-autobiographical scenes.
At the beginning of the video, the “Prelude Pathetique,” Gaga is in a women’s clinic that has the feeling of a psych ward. In every interview about the video, she makes sure to state that it is a women’s clinic, plain and simple. The doctor treating Gaga for whatever reason she’s in the clinic tells her, “I remember when I delivered you. You look just like your mother.” The doctor also tells Gaga, “No intimacy for two weeks.” After an abortion, women are asked not to have sex or use female necessities in that area of the body for two weeks to prevent infection.
The video then cut’s to Gaga’s past as a ballerina. A crazy hyena is in the background and a mirror gets smashed, a la “Black Swan.” Well, you get the drift. It’s only gets crazier from there.
Later, when Gaga is at home and is being undressed, she’s wearing thick underwear. After an abortion, women are given similar undergarments to help prevent infection. A reporter with Vanity Fair who was on set the day this scene was filmed mentioned that the underwear might give away what happened before the prelude. Gaga also wears what looks like tape around her breasts in some shots. Snug bras are typically used if a woman was nine weeks pregnant before an abortion. This allows any developed milk to dry up.
Although Lady Gaga refuses to reveal exactly what went on that day, there are only a couple of things it could have been, a miscarriage or an abortion. Her battered and bruised body in the video indicates the latter. Do you think the small hints are enough to assume the abortion is fact? Or do you think that Lady Gaga is just courting a new kind of controversy?
Maybe she did have an abortion, maybe she didn’t. The fact that one of her music videos references abortion is not any sort of indication one way or the other. In this case, the scene may refer to an actual abortion or to the figurative abortion of that portion of her career. Or to something else entirely. Or maybe it’s just there for the shock value. Lady Gaga is not someone to be taken at face value. Ever. (Especially since face value rarely even makes sense. She has an alter-ego as a mermaid named Yuyi. Seriously. She really does.) All I know is – Lady Gaga, There is a fine line between artistically creative and batshizz crazy. And that’s all I have to say about that.
