Ian Somerhalder, currently starring as the dark & mysterious Damon Salvatore in “The Vampire Diaries,” hot enough to give Robert Pattinson a run for hottest vampire, has signed on to star in “Cradlewood,” a romantic gothic fairy tale set in Boston. Somerhalder will play the son of an old Boston blue-blood family, the heir to a fortune, who’s dating an Australian girl. A family legend of his suggests that the family fortunes are tied up with a demon, and that a curse means that every time a boy is born into the family, his father dies. When he begins to experience strange things at the same time he starts suspecting his girlfriend is pregnant, he begins to worry that it’s not just an old wives’ tale.

“Cradlewood” is based on original story by Harry Weinmann. Emma Lung will play Somerhalders’ girlfriend in the movie. The script was written by Stephen Sewell and John Paul Chapple, and will be produced by Michel Shane and David Redman.

Per Hollywood Reporter:

“We see this is as almost like an American-style ‘Pan’s Labyrinth‘ in look and feel,” Shane said. “It’s a perfect segue for the kids who have outgrown ‘Twilight‘ but want something romantic and scary. Our monster will be quite terrifying; she is sexually attractive and monstrous at the same time.”

“Cradlewood” is scheduled to start shooting in Melbourne, Australia in April, during Somerhalders’ hiatus from “The Vampire Diaries.” It’s an interesting plot, although I’m struggling a little to see were the “romance” is at this point. Oh well, do we really care? I mean, its Ian-freakin’-Somerhalder! His lines could consist of nothing more than reading the nutritional facts off the side of a Planters Peanuts jar and I’d pay the price of admission, repeatedly, to see his sexiness sizzle on screen!

New Music Friday – This Providence

Get ready HWDamers — You are now being thrusted into a new weekly feature called “New Music Friday” where we here at HWD bring you kittens some new music by your favorite artists and hopefully broaden your horizon on some musicians you may not have had the pleasure of being introduced to yet. The first weeks edition focuses on a band called “This Providence.” This Seattle rock band has proved how versatile they’ve become from spending the past two years on the road and refining their craft – their band’s inventive brand of indie rock – by following up their 2006 self-titled “Fueled By Ramen” with their new album “Who Are You Now?” released in March. Originally formed in Seattle back in 2003 by Australian-born vocalist Daniel Young and guitarist Gavin Phillips, the band’s current lineup also features bassist David Blaise and drummer Andy Horst. Their new album is a collection of extremely varied rock songs with influence from bands such as The Cure and The Beatles. It showcases This Providence’s rock edge as much as it does their stripped-down sensibilities.

Per This Providence:

“We took a long time off the road before going into the studio because we wanted to write songs that were dripping with creativity and you can’t rush that,” Young explains, “I think the end result is much stronger because of that… I’m really proud of the way my lyrics turned out this time around. It’s definitely the best work I’ve ever done.”

Formerly known as “Sunday Best,” the have toured with other bands such as Cute Is What We Aim For, Paramore, All Time Low, The Hush Sound, Daphne Loves Derby, Relient K, House of Heroes, Ludo and Brighten. They have just finished The Warped Tour 2009, and are now currently on tour with headliner Cartel, alongside The Summer Set, The Dares and Runner Runner. They have spent most of 2009 on the road making sure they’re heard by as many people as possible. While the album seems to take on an intensely personal vibe, it’s very apparent that anyone who’s ever experienced love or loss can relate to songs like “Selfish” or “Somebody To Talk To” on an emotional level. The first single “Letdown” off their new ablum is in stores and online now! You can watch the video for the song above. HWDamers – don’t be shy! Let us know what you think!

Brace yourself fans! The first big-casting news has now been unleased upon us – Once news of this spreads like wildfire, we may just have another internet meltdown. “Eclipse“, the third movie in the “Twilight” series, has a new face to add to the cast: Riley, the good-looking boy corrupted by Victoria on her quest to kill the protagonist Bella.

24 year-old Australian actor Xavier Samuel is the lucky lad to win the part, and while you may not recognize his name now you will surely be hearing a lot more about this hunky guy in the near future. Could he possibly be the one to give our beloved Sparklepants a run for his money? Nah, probably not… But he is pretty nice eye candy and will make girls hearts beat faster than my run to the box office to buy my tickets when his on-screen fight vs. Edward hits the theater!

Per Just Jared:

“I don’t have any facial hair, so it will be a while before I play the gruff leading man,” Xavier has said. “Maybe one day I’ll get to play my actual age. For now my baby face has condemned me to play the teenager.”

“Eclipse” will be his first U.S. role to date; Xavier has been in series of films back home, including “Newcastle,” in which he played a Goth teenager amidst a group of surfers, the Aussie period drama “September” and the upcoming sci-fi thriller “Road Train.”

Directed by David Slade, “Eclipse,” is set to begin shooting next month in Vancouver and be released on June 30, 2010.

Xavier, I really hope you’re ready to say goodbye to your normal, easy life as you knew it. You’re now completely at the mercy of the Twi-hards!
