Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘Country Strong’ Video – Watch It Here!

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has debuted her “Country Strong” music video. It’s the song accompanying the movie of the same name in which Paltrow plays Kelly Canter, an alcoholic country music singer on her comeback tour who finds her romantic life in upheaval and a young star trying to steal the limelight. The flick co-stars Tim McGraw as Paltrow’s husband/manager and Leighton Meester as a pageant queen turned country princess who joins them on the road.

Per People:

Luckily, Paltrow, 38, was able to rely on husband Chris Martin, 33, the Coldplay frontman, for some musical pointers. As she told Harper’s Bazaar this past spring: “He was so helpful, so sweet and encouraging.”

Today, the video for the movie’s title track hit the Internet. Featuring Paltrow, the clip is mostly shot in an abandoned warehouse with the actress’ band, while pieces from the movie are sprinkled in the gaps. “Country Strong” (the movie) will be out in limited release on Dec. 22nd before going country-wide on January 7th. The song itself is currently on the radio.

As much as I wanted to hate this (because I can’t stand either her or her husband) she really did a wonderful job, especially with no formal training. Even made me a bit interested in seeing the movie… A little bit.

Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview – The Parlotones

From their origins in Johannesburg, South Africa, the rock 4-piece known as The Parlotones have achieved multi-platinum-selling status with their darkly romantic lyrics, atmospheric pop structures, and ambitious live shows that have earned them rave response from fans and critics alike. They will release their U.S. debut album, “Stardust Galaxies,” featuring the lead single “Life Design,” on Tuesday, September 14th. The South African rock 4-piece – which has achieved multi-platinum status in their home country, selling more records than Coldplay, The Killers, and Oasis combined – will support their North American debut by joining Blue October on tour September 17th through October 10th.

The release of Stardust Galaxies follows on the heels of a featured performance in the ABC Music Lounge, and an iTunes “Video of the Week” feature for their 2010 SAMA Music Video of the Year, “Push Me to the Floor.” The album marks the U.S. introduction of a group that has spent the last 18 months on a sold-out, 300-date world tour, packing out 1000+ capacity venues in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Russia, and the UK. Most recently, the band performed in front of a global audience of over 1 billion viewers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Celebration Concert.

Stardust Galaxies’s lead single, “Life Design,” serves as an “ode to those who have created success despite adversity,” says The Parlotones’s front man, Kahn Morbee. “It’s a celebration of those people who have an innate exuberance for life, and pursue the betterment of their own lives and the lives of those around them.”

The band practice what they preach, having become activists against two of the most deadly epidemics in their home country of South Africa: AIDS and malaria. The band has raised funds for The StarFish Foundation and performed at a number of AIDS awareness concerts, including POSI+IVE Rocks. Each year, The Parlotones speak at grade schools in South Africa, educating younger generations on AIDS prevention, and donate all revenue from on-site performances back to the schools themselves for facility renovation and community development. The band also champions for United Against Malaria, an initiative which is attempting to eradicate malaria in Africa.

Now reaching the ears – and minds – of stateside listeners, the band hopes their music can entertain while also providing lyrical insights into the stories, and social and political struggles, of their homeland.

Examples include track 9, “Brighter Side of Hell,” which focuses on the socioeconomic disparity between have and have-nots of their home town. Of the song, Morbee says, ”It’s a bittersweet reflection on Johannesburg. It’s our home and it’s often depicted as a sort of hell. The song emphasizes that although there are problems, there is a bright side and a bright future for the city. We love Johannesburg despite of – and because of – its weird and wonderful imperfections.”

Track 3, “Should We Fight Back,” was inspired by Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom.” “It’s a book I discovered whilst on tour in South Africa, “says Morbee, “and it made me realize the harsh historical climate we once lived in and how close we were to disaster.”

The South African natives have weaved themselves into the fabric of their home country’s history with performances at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration of Jacob Zuma, Africa Day, Live Earth, and a record-breaking show at the Dome in Johannesburg, where they wrote their own piece of African history by becoming the first South African band to ever headline the venue.

I had the chance to ask Kahn Morbee about things such as breaking into the music industry, musical pet-peeves, and artists he’d love to work with. You can read about that below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music, and what sparked that interest?

I’ve had an interest in music since I was a young boy. I would perform in musicals, constantly sing and would often take songs I like and change the lyrics but still keep the melody. The interest was sparked primarily by my surroundings. My entire family was very into music, not necessarily as musicians but just as avid lovers of music.

How would you describe the sound of your music, and how do you feel your music is different from others in your genre?

We’re not purists so our music is ultimately a result of the music we digest which ranges from gentle singer/songwriter stuff, to POP, to electronica, to heavy rock, to metal, to Indie. I guess at the core we’re a melodic rock band with POP sensibilities.

How did you break into the music industry?

We never really ‘broke’ into the industry, that expression gives (at least me) the impression that it was one sudden moment and viola we were in. We played and toured and did everything to get noticed and just kept working on that momentum. It’s been a long process, but thankfully a long process brings with it a certain substance and level of experience.

What are some of your short term and long term goals? What are your plans for promoting your music and upcoming album in the US?

Our short term goals are to tour the world and start work on a new album, the long term goal is ultimately to remain the same four guys touring the world, creating music that is relevant and enjoy doing it. We ultimately want longevity and we want to keep being creative. We will be touring the US in September and October and will constantly be returning in 2011.

Was there ever a time where you felt like giving up music or quitting on your way to where you are now?

Never.

Do you have any musical pet-peeves?

The exclusivity and judgment that comes from certain corners of the music population. Music may not always pander to peoples tastes but it does irk me when people will spend hours ranting about how much they ‘hate’ something instead of focusing on what they like.

Besides music, what are some of your hobbies? What do you do to keep yourself grounded?

I have and still play a lot of sport; I used to play rugby, cricket and soccer bnut have very little time to play in their traditional formats so now I play; indoor soccer, tennis, squash and golf. I love the usual things like reading and film as well.

What do you miss most, besides family and friends, when you are out traveling?

I think I sort of miss the comforts of being at home, things like; routine, my own bed, relaxing. When you’re on tour you’re always stimulated as a result of your surroundings and its quite difficult to step out and unwind.

What is one accomplishment you hope to make above all others in your life and your career?

To be the first South African band that truly as worldwide recognition and leave a legacy in our own country.

Who are some of your musical influences, and who are some artists you would love to work with?

The Smiths, The cure, R.E.M, INXS, Waterboys, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Queen, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, these were the bands that made me fall in love with music and want to be in a band. If I list all the bands I love I may need to type a novel.

What drives you the most to do what you love? What inspires you?

I think I’m driven by the fact that I want to remain doing what I love. Life is short, why pursue anything else, why pursue something you hate? Inspiration comes from those that have achieved great things and from Life itself, the experience of living is quite inspirational. It’s never always up but it’s about collecting a plethora of memories and experiences that allow you to reflect and say I’ve actually ‘LIVED’ life not just ‘EXISTED’

What is your favorite song on your upcoming album and why?

It changes from time to time, at the moment I enjoy playing ‘ we call this dancing’ because live it’s a lot of fun and exudes a positive message.

What sort of feelings do you hope your fans will have from listening to your upcoming album?

The aim was to try and mirror the human experience, which is ultimately a mix of highs and lows, moments of what seems like endless love and heartache, nostalgia, moments to dance and times to soothe the soul. The album will touch on the melancholic and reach highs but ultimately I hope the album makes people optimistic about the concept of life and offers a bit of escapism.

Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview – Alex Band

The inspiring sound of Alex Band’s powerful, emotionally charged voice is immediately recognizable to millions of music lovers, thanks to modern-day classics like “Adrienne,” “Our Lives” and the chart-topping hit “Wherever You Will Go,” which Billboard recently named the #1 Adult Pop Song of the Decade. And though ‘We’ve All Been There,’ Band’s solo debut (released June 29 on his own AMB label through EMI), contains the first new material we’ve heard from the former leader of ‘The Calling‘ in half a decade, “Wherever You Will Go” (which he wrote at 16 and released at 19, remarkably enough) remains a staple of the Adult Pop format, while “Our Lives” is a heavily used bumper on ESPN and other sports programming.

If his fans feel that Band is long overdue for a return to the spotlight, the L.A. native has himself been chafing at the bit to make his return throughout the last five years, which he spent in musical exile. But the time has finally come for that voice to inspire us once again. “I’ve lived with these songs for years,” says Band, “and the whole point is to share them with everybody now.”

Describing the title song, which opens this stunningly wide screen album and sets up its thematic breadth, Band says, “It’s definitely about my own struggle, but I think everyone can relate to what I’ve been through from experiences in their lives. I think everything I’m talking about on the record is pretty universal. And knowing now that I’m writing for different cultures, with fans around the world, it’s important that what I’m writing about is generalized enough that people can take the songs in their own way. ‘We’ve All Been There’ is almost like a mantra—‘Here I am…these scars on my hands…doing what I can’—with this chorus behind me singing, ‘We’ve all been there.’ In a way, I was writing my own therapy.”

The torrid first single, “Tonight,” is now in rotation at Adult Pop radio, where Band remained a core artist during his years of silence. The track has also been used in the CW series “The Vampire Diaries” and can be heard in the TV campaign for this summer’s World Cup (just as “Our Lives” was played over the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics). The striking video, directed by TV veteran David Barrett (The Vampire Diaries, CSI: NY, NCIS: Los Angeles), working with the production crew from the “Twilight” series of feature films, features Band doing his own stunts, including jumping—or more accurately flying—off the top of a cliff. As the video reveals, the song describes a supernatural love story. “I didn’t want to write a conventional love song,” he recalls. “I wanted it to have some weirder meaning—and this was before the resurgence of the vampire love story, but I’d just seen the movie Underworld, and I thought it would be cool and different to write about a vampire trying to win over this girl and to be able to have her for one night. So that led to lines like, ‘Let the music take us over/We’ll fall into forever, all is right/’Cause I got you where I want you/Tonight.’”

At its heart, though, We’ve All Been There charts the course of a distinctly human romantic relationship, from its first stirrings to its final moments. “A lot of these songs are drawn from personal experiences,” Band confirms. “I got married at the beginning of this process and got divorced at the end of the record. ‘Love’ was written in the early stages of that relationship, when my ex-wife was going through medical problems, which we dealt with throughout the years. And ‘Leave (Today Is the Day)’ was the last song I added to the record, after we’d gotten divorced. So a bunch of these songs are extremely personal.” His then-wife’s illness led to the critical need for a liver transplant, which she had to forgo due to the waiting list. The experience inspired Band to devote his time and energies to the Donate Life organization, which is dedicated to building organ-donor awareness.

Band’s creative mechanism was also triggered by “what I’ve seen friends and family going through, and I’ve been hugely influenced by what’s happening in the world. And music, of course—I don’t think anyone can listen to my records and not realize I’m a huge fan of U2. I get massive inspiration from going to shows by some of my favorite bands like U2 and Coldplay. But the biggest inspiration for this record was what I went through—the frustration of it all and trying to stay positive. But it resulted in some good songs, at least.”

The title song’s companion piece is the culminating “Start Over Again.” “As soon as we wrote that one, I knew it had to be the last track,” says Band. “It goes into a jam-out section, with a choir of my overdubbed voice singing, ‘After all you’ve done/You thought there’d be someone/To give you everything you want’—that thought of, ‘Haven’t I done enough?’ But sometimes you don’t get what you want, and you have to accept that and start over again. It was a sort of epiphany, writing that song. So it seemed like the perfect epic song to end the album with.”

So where’s he been all this time? “After the second album,” Band recalls, “my partner in The Calling, Aaron Kamin, wanted to do other things, and since I was already pretty much doing everything on my own, I decided to become a solo artist.” But when the powers that be at RCA insisted that he do a “supergroup” album project, Band sought and got his release, signing with Geffen soon thereafter.

Thus began an elongated project that would span nearly two years, eventually encompassing no less than five co-producers, primarily including the veteran John Fields (Switchfoot), up-and-comer Daniel Damico and engineer Tal Herzberg, with Chuck Reed helming two tracks and Matt Serletic one. Playing alongside Band, who plays guitars and several of the basslines, were some of the best musicians on the planet, including drummers Abe Laboriel Jr., Dorian Crozier and Kenny Aronoff, keyboard player Jamie Muhoberac and guitarist Tim Pierce. The renowned Paul Buckmaster (Elton John’s ’70s classics) contributed string arrangements to several tracks, while the in-demand Chris Lord-Alge mixed the album, as he’d done with The Calling. Loaded with potential hits—and strikingly cohesive despite its diverse origins—the album was completed in 2007.

Later that year, Geffen went through a reorganization, putting the album in limbo. “At the same time, Stu Sobol, my manager for 10 years passed away, which was incredibly sad,” Alex explains. “So, between Geffen going through major changes and Stu passing away, I realized then that I had to make a serious leap of faith and believe in myself. I decided that, if I’m gonna fail, I’d rather fail doing what I want to do.”

Band spent a year in negotiations and a sizable amount of his own money to buy back the album master—so you might say he’s financially as well as emotionally invested in this music. He’s spent the last year creating his label, surrounding himself with a top-flight team and partnering with EMI, which is distributing the album in the States and releasing it outright in all other territories. “I’ve finally got creative control, which is the main reason I went through all this,” he says. So now I’m starting completely over as a solo artist and reintroducing myself to the world.”

I had the chance to talk with Alex and ask him about his upcoming album, his plans for the future, and what he likes to do in the little free time he has. You can read about that below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music and what sparked that interest?

I don’t know what really sparked that interest. I mean, I was really into music as early as 2 years old so I don’t know. I remember my father used to listen to the Beatles and David Bowie. When I was 5 years old, he flew us all to Paris to see “The Phantom of the Opera” and that really started it all. I got my first guitar at 8 years old and started writing seriously. At 11, I made my first record and at 15 I had a record deal.

How did you break into the music industry?

Well really the first step was the record deal. A guy moved in next door to us and it turned out he was the VP of RCA and I knew that was a good chance so I drove him crazy and ended up signing. 10 years later Disney heard “Wherever You Will Go” and asked for me to perform it in the movie “Coyote Ugly” when I was 19 and a year later I recorded an album.

What makes you feel that your upcoming album is different from other artists in your genre?

I would say the songwriting, mostly. Its lush and timeless. I think its a good representation of that. “Wherever You Go” is still played and that was released 10 years ago. I write songs that are big, compassionate, and heartfelt.

What are some of your plans for promoting your album – do you plan on touring, doing ‘meet & greets,’ etc…?

Oh, I’m doing it all. I’ve been on tour for the past 5 months in Europe and America. My single “Tonight” is in the 20s on the Top 40 charts. I’ve been doing a mixture of radio visits, meet & greets, opening for other people. In Europe I was touring, doing openings, and tv appearances. I have a headlining tour that starts July 14th. I start shooting today for a big tv show, that I can’t mention who it is right now, for August. I’m doing lots of cool promotions.

What are some short term and long term goals that you have lined out for yourself. What’s next for you?

Short term would be to make my first single a hit, working hard with radio and with fans to push it as high as it can go. Long term would be to get the album out and solidify my career as a solo artist. Put out records way more frequently, I mean this is my 1st in 6 years.

Have you written or created a song that didn’t make the album cut that you wished would have?

I think I’ve written about 150 songs for this album. Recorded 20 of them. 14 made the cut. One extra for iTunes. One extra on the European version. so I’m sure that the others that were recorded will be released in some fashion, so no I don’t think I have one. Usually the labels allow for 12 songs on a record, and I used 14 since I created it myself.

Do you have any musical pet-peeves?

I would have to say music without heart, music that won’t be here 10 years from now. I like music that captures a moment in your life, so that later on when you hear it you will remember the moment that was special.

Besides music, what are your favorite things to do? What keeps you grounded?

When I’m home, which is rare, I like being normal. Taking walks, going to the movies, spending time with my family and being with my fiance. Relaxing really. I like to fly, too. I’m a helicopter pilot. Just recently I flew to northern California and back for a performance. Its a freedom thing, really.

What do you miss the most, besides family and friends, while you are out traveling?

My cat. Or, well, I have two cats now, so my cats. Just the comfort of home, especially when I keep going to Europe. I think in this year I have traveled 150,000 miles, been around the world about 4 times. I miss the places I eat, the drinks I know, just the things you take for granted. The simple things like going to bed and waking up the same time, which is hard with the constant changing of time zones.

What is one accomplishment you hope to make above all others in your life and your career?

In my life, having children. It’s definitely something that I want to do. In my career, well I’m not going to sit here and say I want to win a Grammy. I just want to keep making a living with my music, touring, making albums, and having the freedom to do what I want to do with my music. Keep having a fan base. I don’t have to be the biggest or the best, but just to do it and sustain my lifestyle.

Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview – Runner Runner

Five distinct personalities joining forces to make one mighty sound — that’s “Runner Runner.” The SoCal band’s self-titled debut album — released through a new partnership with Capitol Records, C.E. Music (a new label formed by David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants Inc.) and Jack Ponti’s MRV label — combines skillful songwriting and musicianship, punk-infused intensity and humungous pop hooks. The entrance that Runner Runner – front man Ryan Ogren, guitarists Nick Bailey and Peter Munters, bassist Jon Berry and drummer James Ulrich – is making on an unsuspecting music scene is in keeping with its name that has its origins in Ogren and Berry’s love of poker: “runner runner” is a poker term that, loosely defined, means “coming out of nowhere and pulling off a winning hand at the last possible moment.”

Veterans to the music industry, bassist Berry was a founding member of the SoCal pop-punk band, Rufio, Ogren was the vocalist/guitarist for New Jersey’s Don’t Look Down, and Munters, Bailey & Ulrich were members of OC’s Over It. They all came together in 2008 to create what is now Runner Runner. The five members are a combination of skillful songwriting and musicianship, punk-infused intensity and songs with humongous hooks with tremendous potential. Having admired each other’s talents and enjoyed each other’s company on numerous occasions as their bands crisscrossed the country on various van tours, the five musicians snapped together like Lego pieces when serendipity presented them with the opportunity to form a band together.

Runner Runner has over eight-million plays on their MySpace, were named a 2009 Band to Watch by Alternative Press, and has performed more than 175 shows on bills with such prominent left-offcenter acts as Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, Gym Class Heroes, Angels & Airwaves, The Higher, The Audition and The White Tie Affair. Theyre also veterans of the festival circuit, appearing in 2009 on the Vans Warped Tour, Bamboozle and Tokyos Punkspring Festival, as well as the Night of Lights Festival and the L.A. Ink Fest during the previous year. The band is currently recording their self-titled debut album in Los Angeles with producer Dave Darling (Stray Cats, Brian Setzer, Soulive), and plan to tour extensively after their album drops later this summer. Their first single, “So Obvious,” will be released to radio on June 15. (Check out “So Obvious” here ) Runner Runner kicked off the first leg of an extensive tour beginning in mid-May, and are currently on tour with Amber Pacific before joining up with Cartel.

I had the chance to speak with Jon about the bands goals, influences, and hobbies. You can read that below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music and what sparked that interest?

Well for me, my family tells me about that first interest. It was on a family vacation in San Diego when I was 7, watching the bands play on the campground. They say I was intent on watching them. I’ve always been into music. I can remember listening to Michael Jackson, singing to his songs on the radio. I guess in high school is when it really picked up for me, when I started playing music. Its always been a huge passion of mine.

How did you break into the music industry?

Well, we all come from different bands. We used to tour together in Japan and through the states. A few years ago I moved in with Ryan and we started writing and doing songs together.

How would you describe the sound of your music, and what makes you feel like your music is different from other artists in your genre?

I think when you hear it, you’ll know its Runner Runner. The way it sounds it stands out more because our songs are personal. They are lyrically engaging and instrumentally, too. We just like to have fun with our music, but at the same time we draw from personal experiences.

What are some of your plans for promoting your music?

We are all huge internet nerds, so getting our music out that way is one. Another is touring and playing plenty of shows.

Musically speaking,w hat are some of your short term and long term goals?

Short term, to play David Letterman. Long term, just always making and writing music, and promoting it. I also want to have a house in Hawaii. It’d be awesome to make a record there – Go surfing in the morning and writing music in the evening.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Lady Gaga and Tom Petty.

Who are some artist you’d like to work with?

Everybody. It’d be cool to work with some songwriters. Working with Ryan Tedder would be sick. And Coldplay would be sick, too.

How did you come up with the name “Runner Runner?”

‘Runner Runner’ was the surviving name on a dry erase board in the house. We wanted a big name, and we came up with some fun names, like ‘The Boys Team.’ But ‘Runner Runner’ just always stood out.

Where do you get your song inspirations from, lyrically speaking?

The only place you can get them from, through life and personal experiences. We draw from everything around us.

Besides music, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

Nick and I love surfing. We’ve surfed in Japan, Hawaii, California, the East Coast. Just love the beach life, the atmosphere. Other than that, I’d have to say watching movies and coming up with our own comedy skits.

Tell Ryan, Peter, Nick, Jon & James what you think about their music and to find out more about them, head to their MySpace, Facebook, or Twitter pages.

Chris Martin Allegedly Cheats on Gwyneth Paltrow With Kate Bosworth

Snore.

sound relief concert 140309

According to Star Magazine, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was caught playing ‘Hide My Tongue’ with actress Kate Bosworth…despite the fact that he is married to Gwyneth Paltrow.

Reports that Martin has not been able to keep it in his pants have been floating around for awhile, however, back in the day, Lady G had some Hollywood pull and managed to keep their business out of the press.

Unfortunately, and if you believe Star Magazine, Martin decided to frolic about with Bosworth at a U2 concert in Las Vegas.

Via Lainey Gossip:

“Ordinarily, considering it’s Star, the immediate reaction is to dismiss. But here’s why this report might be different. Because several magazines were investigating it a few days ago. I received calls about it on Saturday from other magazines. Chris and Kate were supposedly kissing in the open at a U2 show in Vegas two weeks ago in plain view. Which means that there was more than one witness. And each witness went to a tabloid. And each tabloid was scrambling to source it. And Star Magazine beat everyone else to the punch.Because their fact checkers are faster? Heh. Needless to say, reps for all three have issued denials. Because reps NEVER EVER lie.”

As Lainey continues to point out, this lands Lady G on the cover of supermarket tabloids next to covers featuring Jon and Kate Plus 8 updates. This either means her career is officially over (sans for her small appearances in the Iron Man movies) or that she’s back.

I, however, am wondering when she ever was to begin with.

2008 AMA’s – Everyone was Drunk – Video

If have to answer one more question about the rumored drunkenness that was the 2008 American Music Awards….I will be forced to go get hammered myself.

So…Rihanna, Chris Martin from Coldplay and Scott Weiland were all said to have put on shoddy performances and are thusly drunk. Scott had a difficult time standing upright while simultaneously reading and is also now labeled drunk.

Truth is…either A – These are human beings that record in studios that grind flawless recordings into our brains, so when you see the live shiz….it is just terrible. OR B – Everyone was sloshed at the AMA’s/

Your choice, but I am thinking that if Rihanna could waltz around the stage wearing an eye patch and dominatrix heels she is either a classy drunk or her talent comes from the recording studio. Chris Martin wants to be Bono and can’t pull it off so he appears trashed. And Scott Weiland ….probably drunk.
