Deadliest Catch: Phil Harris Remembered

We open with Josh dealing with thousands of questions echoing in the background as he tries to process his father, Phil Harris’ death.
Click HERE to read last week’s recap of Deadliest Catch *The episode recorded its biggest audience ever last Tuesday with an episode dealing with the death of Capt. Phil Harris after a stroke. Nearly 8.5 million viewers tuned in to watch his final moments.

The fleet is still fishing despite an arctic storm hammering the boats with 30 foot seas. The Northwestern is blissfully unaware of Phil’s death and focused on stuffing the tanks with crab. Meager numbers keep the resentment flowing for Edgar and dishearten the rest of the crew. As 60 mile per hour winds tear at the crew, Sig finally calls the crew off the deck and throws in the towel. They leave behind a possible few thousand pounds.

Back in St. Paul Harbor, the Cornelia Marie sits with Freddie holding down the fort. Josh calls to let him know that Phil has died. He breaks down and silently cries before sharing the devastating news. Another crewman is working on the boat and Freddie waits, harboring the pain as Steve finishes making a cut to something on the boat. Finally, he takes a break to see what Freddie is after. The news hits him the hardest as he walks away to shed tears in private.

On the Time Bandit, Andy clocks the wind at nearly 60 mph. He too shuts work on the deck down. Safety is a concern and with these men, you know it is rough working conditions to shut them down. Other boats also pull crew inside.

Eerily the weather calms beyond comprehension a few hours later. Fog fills the air and ice builds on deck. It looks like something from a movie. I half expect pirates to come sneaking up. The Kodiak takes a few hits as visibility is around 15 feet. A problem with the hydros sends a pot flying around the deck, nearly taking out two crewmen. Luckily, they get it under control.

The Time Bandit is back to fishing and pull packed pots, much to the crew’s delight, but not so much to the bait boy. Andy decides to do a set back as they need to stuff two more tanks. Sore, the bait boy gets another job. He is given the task of tossing buoys. One gets snagged and we see the greenhorn starting to complain about homesickness. (Uh-oh. It was great knowing you.)

As Sig and the Northwestern pulls into town, they indulge in a little bit of fun and Jake gets owned in a game of arm wrestling. They are all still unaware of Phil’s passing. Sig goes to meet the temporary captain, Derek Ray. The temp captain quickly becomes aware that Sig doesn’t know of Phil’s death after Sig makes a joke of Phil laughing about the new non-smoking wheelhouse when he returns.

Derek instantly becomes distraught as he is now burdened with rehashing the news. As he tries to get the words out, he begins to cry. Sig is confused and antsy with waiting to hear what he has to say. He finally mutters the words “I found out that Phil passed away.” Clearly, Sig did not expect that to be the news. He takes a few minutes to process and feels cheated. “We just talked ot those kids yesterday!”

You can see the emotions spinning through Sig. Derek states that he wants to keep the boat going. Sig excuses himself and returns to his wheelhouse. Lighting a cigarette, he is furious. “Phil was giving me a pep talk!” We cut to the crew sitting around the table crying. Edgar shakes his head in disbelief as he wipes a flood of tears away with the sleeve of his shirt. Jake Anderson’s eyes are watery and the size of dinner plates. Disbelief and shock hang in the air much like the icy fog that plagued the boats earlier.

The Time Bandit gets the phone call. Andy takes the news with the same disbelief and lets his camera shy brother know that “Phil ain’t here no more. Phil Harris died. Phil’s gone, man.” It’s as almost as he is trying to convince himself the news is true.

Sig and the crew return to work as he debates, “We still have to do our thing, but there’s time for grieving too.” It’s more of hypothetical to himself on how to handle it all. As he passes the Cornelia Marie on the way back out to sea, the crew stand on deck to salute the boat. Jake begins break and tries to control his battered and beaten emotions.

Andy talks about his American flag which is literally hanging on by threads. We turn to shots from Phil’s funeral. A Harley gas tank sits on a table in the center of his gathered friends, family and fellow fisherman. Josh spoke about their plans to spread Phil’s ashes at sea during the next king crab season. They place the gas tank that bears a painted image of Jake, Josh and Phil into the ground.

Seagulls sit on Northwestern’s bow as the go to sea. Sig shares the fact that seamen said that seagulls were the spirits of fallen fisherman. He theorizes that Phil could be one of those birds sitting on his bow.

AFTER THE CATCH CAPTAIN PHIL REMEMBERED SPECIAL: THE PHIL HARRIS STORY

Johnathan Hillstrand opens the special to honor Phil with the best quote to sum it up: “I was blessed to walk this planet with Phil Harris. That’s an honest, noble, straight-talkin, hard working guy. How could you not love somebody like that? That’s a damn fact.”

Clips of Phil at his finest and not so finest run as fellow captains and his sons. They mention some of Phil’s one liners and faces. He was full of personality. Sig mentions he will miss his laugh.

Phil Harris was born in Bothell, Washington. His dad was a salmon fisherman. Baby pictures of Phil scroll across the screen as he explains that his mother died when he was 8 of skin cancer that spread to her brain. Grant Harris, Phil’s father, talks about trying to raise his son on a boat. He mentioned his natural knack for finding the fish.

More photos of Phil as a teen behind drums and wearing a glorious 70’s top with huge red polka dots. He and several friends rented a house together. Imagine the debauchery that took place there. This was the time he fell in love with all things on wheels. To fund his expensive taste in toys, he offers to work for an entire year for free on a crab boat to nab a share on boat.

After 3 months of being ill and barely making it, the captain came down and guaffed: “I knew you wouldn’t make it!” This fueled his fire and he kept at it. A clip of Phil walking through a yard stacked with pots and narrating the story of his rise to full share deckhand.

After he nabbed a full share, he went to an old teacher’s house with a big bag of cash and asked to buy her house. Simply to spite her. That was Phil.

Finally we see the barely mentioned Mrs. Phil Harris, Mary. She speaks of how he wooed her with his non-stop personality.

In 1978 Phil cut his finger off! He was forced to take a leave of the boat Golden Viking. A typhoon hit the boat and tore it apart. The engine room flooded and distress call went out. This was before the technology that saves lives today. Phil’s father was captain of the boat. It didn’t sink, but Grant managed to bring the boat home after 8 days of fruitless searching.

When Phil turned 21, his father handed him the keys to a boat. He was a captain. His knack for finding the crab proved successful. In 1982 Phil and Mary married. 11 months later, Josh was born followed by Jake 2 years later.

After making money and buying into the Cornelia Marie as a partner, his marriage fell apart in 1991. The stress of constantly being at seas took its toll. Despite the broken family, he kept in touch with Mary and brought his sons on board to solidify a family bond.

In 2005 Jake boarded the Cornelia Marie as a greenhorn. Clips from past seasons run with Phil going on a rant about earning his way. Josh follows a year later and joins the Harris team.

Phil’s quirky habits are examined. His crab fart theory makes for wonderful conversation at parties. He sells the story that crabs fart and little bubbles begin to pop on the surface of the water means good fishing. Jake and Josh buy it and get excited as the smell the crab farts fills the air.

Things turn back to a note of grim reality. Sig and the fellow captains discuss how proud he would be of his two boys. Clips of the Harris boys smiling and laughing with their father run in slow motion. The stress factor slides in uninvited.

Storms and uncontrollable conditions and factors worried Phil. His nervous ticks of a thumping foot and thumb rubbing are highlighted. Andy from the Time Bandit admits he never knew how stressed Phil became over at every turn.

Flashbacks to a clot that nearly claimed his life in 2008 play. Sig explains that Phil’s process of dealing with his ailing health. He was trying to take care of the boat first. Clips of Phil smoking during his hospital gown roll as we are reminded just how much the sea called to him.

Despite sitting out the next crabbing season and focusing on bird house building with a little Yorkie at his side, we all know how his story plays out. Josh shares a story about getting a few phone calls at 3 in the morning from his father wanting to go out for a ride. Josh would patronize him and agree to go, only to find out Phil was already sitting in his driveway.

He returned to the boat after being unable to resist his true passion. Phil spent one last time fishing The Rock. It was his personal honey-hole and one of the most difficult areas to fish. Red bulls, cigarettes and horrible diets returned. A price tag would come at the end of the season. As he made his delivery, Phil suffered the stroke that would eventually take his life.

Johnathan shares the fact that when Phil was in the hospital the seas raged with the storm that forced Captains to pull their crews in. The day he died was the same day the eerie quiet seas rolled in.

We will miss you Phil.

Deadliest Catch: Phil Harris’ Stroke, Jake Anderson’s Father Missing Details

DEADLIEST CATCH – BLOWN OFF COURSE

When we last left the Deadliest Catch fisherman, Jake Harris found by his ill father stealing his pain meds and admitted that he was an addict, Jake Anderson’s father was missing and all that was found was his truck.

The show opens with a recap of the admission of Jake’s addiction to pain killers. Moving forward, Jake and Phil have it out. The sick captain lays it down easily by telling him to go to treatment. It’s plain. it’s simple and there were no tears flying. If only it were that plain and simple in real life. The dry confrontation is the opposite of what you’d expect from the Cornelia Marie skipper. Phil even tells Jake that he will be going to meetings with him. The two exchange hugs and Harris admits that rehab might be Jake’s only chance. Cutting the trip short, the boat turns back to Dutch Harbor.

Meanwhile Jon on the Time Bandit is warring with taking a break. He announces he is done with this season and taking a 20 day break. This brings up who will take over the boat when they retire. Jon’s son, Scotty, is the natural heir. He has been fighting for two years “not to fall into the fate” of most fisherman. Currently his wife left him and he is fighting in court for his son. Scotty doesn’t appear to be the answer as beyond his personal resistance…he lacks not only the love, but the experience.

This hits me as next season could be very different. Phil and the Hillstrand brothers may retire and Edgar is walking on a line of love and hate for crab fishing.

On the Northwestern Jake Anderson is still not sharing his father’s situation, but Sig is aware of the news that has spread through Seattle that his father’s truck was found empty on a logging road in the middle of nowhere. The captain is extremely hesitant to tell him this as it doesn’t bode well. Instead he talks to Anderson’s uncle who got him a job on the boat.

The decision is made. Jake is called to the wheel house where he calls his mother. She manages to get the words out that “we found his truck” before they are cut off. He immediately calls back and she manages to let him know that his father is missing and they are searching she tells him not to give up hope. Again, they are cut off. This time he can’t get a phone call out.

Phil…it’s unbelievably sad to watch him slowly self destruct. His foot is practically vibrating is stress. A cigarette is clutched in his hand. His eyes slowly blink away tears.

The Hillstrand brothers dump their catch and Jon heads toward sunny skies and sand under his feet. They continue warring with who will take over the boat. Andy returns to the boat and announces that Mike Fourtner is their pick to takeover. This is the first time he is speechless and actually doesn’t look to enthusiastic.

Back to the Cornelia Marie. The boat has made it back to Dutch and Phil is looking through baby pictures as the boat is offloaded. Josh and Jake join him in the wheel house and they all go through the family photos together. After a trip down memory lane, they return to the deck. Phil goes to his room and shuts the door. To verify the crab count the skipper needs to sign off. One of the crewman calls his room and he doesn’t answer. He goes to investigate and all we hear is crewman Steve say: “Oh my God.”

He immediately calls for Jake and Josh. Josh calls 911 and an ambulance shows up as crewman are running everywhere. Steve found him face down in his room and unresponsive. They show everything. Josh immediately takes control. Paramedics are testing him and his entire left side of his body won’t move. Phil Harris has had a stroke that will eventually take his life.

Phil is able to answer simple questions, which is promising, but we know his fate. Jake is in the kitchen breaking down. Josh helps the paramedics get him out of the depths of the boat. His crewmen and son carry him out to the deck where he is lifted out. A crow is shown sitting on the boat while Josh gets in the ambulance with his father and Jake watches helplessly. Josh comforts Phill by reminding him that he isn’t alone.

AFTER THE CATCH

Back at the Blue Nile, Phil’s it still sits empty with a photo of a smiling Phil in watching over the table. Tonight the boat under the microscope is the Northwestern. Edgar joins the captain’s table. The brother rivalry is examined.

Out of curiosity, I checked Sig and Edgar’s ages. Despite my ballpark guess of 48 and 42 … Sig is 44 and Edgar is 33. The family factor stews in Edgar and his kids and wife pull at his heartstrings.

Jake Harris and Jake Anderson are brought in and the Jake swap details are brought out. We see a clip of the 2009 episode of After the Catch where the original Jake swap idea came into play. Phil and Sig hatched the plan. Both boys look pretty good despite going through an extremely difficult year.

Jake Anderson reveals that he is currently getting his license and going to school to make fishing his life. He is beaming with pride. Finally, a moment of happiness for Jake. A clip of Jake getting to run the Northwestern, pick up a pot and getting into the bowels of the ship and transferring fuel in the engine room. He also addressed his missing father issue. He explains that he didn’t say anything about the situation to the crew to keep everyone’s focus on the job and safety. Sig also mentions that he feels fatherly toward Jake as his father is still missing.

Keith Anderson, Jake’s missing father, is a 63 year old retired high school counselor. He disappeared on January 6th. Jake’s uncle, Chris, saw him that morning and shared a pot of coffee. It was a typical day as he ran errands and moved a washer and dryer for his daughter. He then reportedly went to “meet and acquaintance.” Chris and Jake stated that the “acquaintance” was supplying Keith with Oxycontin.

“Normally, he would go out and get the pills and be back about three or four hours later, but, that day, he never came back,” Chris said. “One of his acquaintances later said he last saw him in Sultan, which is about 120 miles from where he lives, and that was the last time anyone claims to have seen him.”

It became much worse. Jake’s mother found his father’s phone lying in a mud puddle by their house after he went missing. No activity has taken place on his bank account or credit cards. The last person to have probably seen Keith was his “acquaintance” who claimed he gave him the pain killers and dropped him off at a grocery store parking lot and never saw him again.

On January 22 his white 1999 Ford truck was found abandoned 11 miles up a remote logging road stuck between two logs. The truck was locked and they keys were inside and small traces of blood were found on them, but it wasn’t enough to determine whose blood it was. The official search for Keith ended on January 28th.

While it doesn’t look good…Jake isn’t giving up. He is still searching and holding hope while he has nabbed his First Mate’s license.

Lindsay Lohan Facing 5150 Hold ???

Lindsay Lohan is a guest on 'Alan Carr: Chatty Man'

Things are getting really bad for Lindsay Lohan yet again! According to reports, Lohan needs to get help very soon or things are going to be bad, with friends worrying that she could become another Hollywood tragedy. Now TMZ says in an exclusive report that in addition to friends and family, authorities are piping up and saying they’ve looked in the situation and feel the same way.

We’re told during one of Lindsay’s crazier nights out recently, cops became so concerned they discussed taking her in for a 5150 evaluation.

They also say that “some police officers who routinely come in contact with Lindsay tell TMZ they have thought seriously about forcing her to get help,” after her recent substance-fueled late nights on the town, which would mean a so-called 5150 evaluation. In other words: If a person can’t take care of him or her self, officials will step in and get that person mental health assistance. Police sources who spoke to TMZ cite Lindsay’s “erratic behavior” and “attitude” as cause for serious concern. They later decided against it after speaking to her representatives because they felt she didn’t meet all the criteria and was capable of taking care of herself, at least for now. TMZ cited a “professional” source as saying that Lindsay is in serious danger of kicking it if she doesn’t clean up her act.

“If she doesn’t get help soon, she’s going to die.”

Friends and family say Lindsay, who has in the past been treated for alcohol addiction, has fallen prey to the vicious cycle of substance abuse. Previously Lohan has been admitted to rehab in an attempt to get her movie career back on track, however it looks as if perhaps another visit may be the best thing for her before she joins the R.I.P Hollywood Elite. It’s hard to believe that the “recovering addict” is really recovering from her addiction when all she’s been seen working hard at is heading out to clubs every night. If that’s the picture of health, then it’s scary to think what unhealthy looks like.

I’m all out of jokes. I hope she gets the help she needs and fast – with Dina and Michael Lohan having nothing to do with trying to make it happen. They’ve already proven to be much more a part of the problem than part of the solution.

Rue McClanahan Suffered a Stroke

rue-mcclanahan-blanche-golden-girls-1.jpg

Oh kittens! Let us light a thousand candles in a vigil for Rue McClanahan. The fiercest ho on the “Golden Girls” suffered a stroke shortly after undergoing a heart bypass surgery.

Via America’s Globe Magazine Per Contact Music:

“The 75 year old collapsed in a New York hospital a week after undergoing surgery.
Doctors worked around the clock to remove a blood clot, but feared they’d failed to save MCClanahan’s life.

Wilson says, “Then, her right leg began to move and, not long afterward, she was able to walk a bit.
“They kept her in ICU (intensive care) for two weeks and then put her into the rehab centre. She’s come out of that and is now in a nursing facility.”

While we are all very thankful she has survived the stroke, it has taken a toll on the actress.

“Wilson, who has been married to MCClanahan for 12 years, adds, “She can understand what you are saying in conversation, but still has some trouble speaking. Her speech is slower than it once was and she hasn’t completely recovered on the right side of her body.”

We here at Hollywood Dame wish her the best of health and happiness. We hope she continues to recover and admire her strength.

Dennis Hopper on Death’s Doorstep?!?

dennis-hopper.jpg

Let us hope that this is just dribble at the hands of the National Enquirer. The rag has claimed that Dennis Hopper has given up in his fight against cancer and is telling friends that he is “ready to die.”

“Dennis has come to grips with the fact that the end is likely near. He knew going into the last weeks of filming Crash that he was on borrowed time. His doctors had told him they were no longer able to contain the disease, and his condition had severely worsened.”

Hopper has been battling prostate cancer. He was reportedly diagnosed in September of 2009. The word is that it has spread to his bones and the experimental treatment he tried is not working.

I have my fingers crossed that all of this is entirely false. Best wishes for Dennis and his family.

Johnson and Johnson Heiress, Casey Johnson, Died

casey-johnson-johnson-and-johnson-heiress-dead-1.jpg

Casey Johnson of the Johnson and Johnson empire has died. The 30 year old was found dead on the morning of the 4th (yesterday). You may recognize the name as she was recently engaged to Tila Tequila. She announced the death of Casey via Twitter:

“Everyone please pray 4 my Wifey Casey Johnson. She has passed away. Thank u for all ur love and support but I will be offline to be w/ family.”‘

So far details have been sketchy. Police confirmed that firefighters were called to her home on at 11:51 yesterday and pronounced dead at the scene. An officer stated that it appeared to be a natural death with no evidence of foul play. TMZ reports that a source told them that Casey had been dead for several days before her body was found yesterday. Toxicology reports and a full investigation will follow.

Reports that tween singer Justin Bieber died followed reports of Casey Johnson’s death. Those reports are false. Bieber is NOT dead.

Brittany Murphy’s Cause of Death: Drugs, Foul Play or Natural Causes?

brittany-murphy-pic1.jpg

Brittany Murphy, actress and wife to Simon Monjack, died at age 32 from cardiac arrest yesterday. New details on the tragedy are emerging, while accusations and rumors are flying with everything from drugs to anorexia to her husband coming under suspicion. But how did she really die – was it drugs? Foul Play? Natural causes? Certainly its not ‘natural’ for someone so young and full of life to just pass away, was it? Her family told Los Angeles officials that she was extremely ill in the days before her death. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter says they will conduct an autopsy today to try to determine what killed her. He says the reported illness could be a contributing factor to her death, but that it will be weeks before a final determination is made. Prescription medications were taken from Murphy’s home and officials say they will contact her personal physician to get a better sense of her medical history. An official cause of death may not be determined for some time, since toxicology tests will be required and could take up to six weeks. Winter says Murphy’s death appears to be from natural causes.

Per PopEater:

Capt. John Kades of the coroner’s office says, “Foul play is not suspected at this time because there were no outward signs of trauma or other injuries,” according to PEOPLE.

TMZ, which first reported that Murphy died after going into full cardiac arrest, has since reported that Murphy was very ill in the hours prior to her death and that she was taking prescription medications for flu-like symptoms she had been experiencing for several days. Sources also told TMZ that Murphy was vomiting before she died Sunday and that several types of prescription drugs were found in the house.

“There were a lot … a lot of prescriptions in the house.” We’re also told authorities did not find illegal drugs in the house, but Murphy was definitely taking various prescription meds.

Murphy collapsed inside the home she shared with husband. Some reports indicate he is the one who found her, while others claim it was her mother Sharon, in the bathroom of her home where there was ‘a significant amount of vomit’ in the room. A neighbor reports seeing the paramedics attempting to revive Murphy, who appeared then to be dead. She was transported to Cedars-Sinai, where she was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:04 a.m. Murphys’ mother also told paramedics that she suffered with Type 2 diabetes, but people connected to the case believe its highly unlikely that contributed to her death. Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into Murphy’s death, with detectives and the coroner’s officials at Murphy and Monjack’s home Sunday afternoon.

In somewhat of a creepy turn, Perez Hilton predicted Brittany’s death in a radio interview earlier this month. When radio host AJ Machado asked Perez if there was another celebrity headed for the same fate as Michael Jackson, Perez reportedly said, “Brittany Murphy maybe.” Did he know something we don’t? Perez has since blogged a warning to Lindsay Lohan and Courtney Love to straighten out their act so they won’t be next – let’s hope he’s not right the next time! But Murphy had said that 2010 was the year she had planned to try for a baby with her husband, although she also somewhat foreshadowed her own death in a statement made in 2003.

Per Bumpshack:

“Everybody has difficult years, but a lot of times the difficult years end up being the greatest years of your whole entire life, if you survive them.”

No matter how ill she was, she was still too young to die. It’s a shame that we had to lose such a talented actress. We wish Murphy’s family and friends all the best during this difficult time. Feel free to leave your condolences below.
