New Music Friday – Adele

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known professionally as just Adele, is an English singer who describes her musical style as “heartbroken soul.” She began singing at the age of 4 when she became obsessed with voices, an obsession that she says is still ongoing. Some of her influences includes Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, who she says she stumbled upon on accident while a teenager looking through cds in a local record store.

Adele wrote her first record, “Hometown Glory” when she was only 16 years old. During her teenage years she recorded a demo and gave it to her friend who eventually put it on MySpace where it became very successful. Adele then got a record deal through MySpace, but at first didn’t believe it was real because the only record company she knew was Virgin Records. In 2007, Adele was awarded with the first ever Brit Awards Critics’ Choice Award. She then later signed to independent music label XL Recordings, which in January 2008 released her second single “Chasing Pavements.” The singer has said that the song was written after a night on the town with her ex-boyfriend, who she realized wasn’t worth pursuing anymore.

At the Grammy nomination concert last December, the Jonas Brothers told MTV News that they were big fans of her music. Adele, who performed at the Grammys with country act Sugarland, was up for four awards and won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award in addition to being named the Best New Artist. Her album was certified as Gold in February 2009 by the Recording Industry Association of America selling over 230,000 copies in the United States during the first quarter of 2009, ranking it fourth among international artists. Her first single, “Hometown Glory” has been re-released as her fourth, and latest, single. It has been widely featured on United Kingdom and United States television shows including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “One Tree Hill.” Adele wrote the song in 10 minutes after her mother tried to persuade her to leave her home town of West Norwood in London for college. Etta James Pulls Offer to Whoop Beyonce

Etta James….you have disappointed me. I was so hoping to see a battle to death. I could already picture the weaves flying and acrylics popping out like claws. In case you missed Etta’s attack on B…here it is again.

While doing a performance for a crowd Etta James threatened to whoop Beyonce for singing her song, “At Last” at the Inaugural Ball. The audio of her jokes about hating Besus and making fun of Barack Obama’s ears hit the net. Immediately she wanted to clear up the air.

NY Daily News:

“I didn’t really mean anything,” James said. “Even as a little child, I’ve always had that comedian kind of attitude. … That’s probably what went into it. I was feeling left out of something that was basically mine, that I had done every time you look around.”

Where is your lady version of testicular fortitude Etta? Better safe than sorry I guess. I am sure if she didn’t back peddle some sort of Beyonce mafia in skinny pants and would make sure she woke up bald. Still…disappointing.

What Others Said:

D-Listed – “I’m guessing that Basement Baby paid Etta a little visit and handed her an envelope. Etta opened it and found a note on Sasha Fierce (made from 100% ego fibers) stationary that said, “It’s backtrack time! Love, Daddy Knows.”

Socialite Life – “There’s no shame in that, Etta! Oh, hell no! Fifteen pounds and a blond wig doesn’t make some diva-in-training your replacement.”

Etta James Threatens to Whoop Beyonce – Audio

Now here’s a fight I’d pay hundred of dollars for a ticket to watch! 71-year-old singer Etta James actually threatened to beat the crap out of Beyonce Knowles. And it’s all be caught on tape! Fierce & feisty Etta showed who the real diva was and lashed out extra hard on Beyonce during her concert in Seattle a few nights ago reports MTV. James was none too pleased at Beyonces’ rendition of her signature song “At Last” during the first dance of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at last month’s Neighborhood Inaugural Ball. TMZ caught the audio for her slam on Beyonce.

Via YBF:

“You guys know your president, right? You know the one with the big ears? Wait a minute, he ain’t my president, he might be yours, he ain’t my president. You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song–she’s going to get her ass whipped.”

“The great Beyonce. I can’t stand Beyonce,” she spat. “She has no business up there, singing up there on a big ol’ president day, singing my song that I’ve been singing forever.”

Beyonce recently immortalized the legendary singer Etta James in the big screen production “Cadillac Records,” which came out in December. So far neither Beyonce or her reps have had any comments. Ironically Etta didn’t kick up a fuss for Beyonce’s portrayal of her in the movie. She acted as a mentor to Beyonce and even attended the movies premiere, posing for pictures with the younger diva. Don’t let those wrinkles fool ya, she’ll still kick your ass! My money is on James!
