Paula Deen Confirms Diabetes Diagnosis – VIDEO

Remember that rumor Paula Deen has type 2 diabetes and is going to replace her I HEART BUTTER Y’ALL bumper sticker with an I HEART NOVARTIS Y’ALL endorsement? Click HERE for a refresher. Turns out that the National Enquirer was right. Deen confirmed her diabetes diagnosis on the ‘Today Show’ with Al Roker.

Paula talked about finding out she now has adult onset diabetes 3 YEARS AGO. The Daily reheated the rumor a few days ago after the Novartis deal was inked. Deen explained that she waited 3 years to share her diagnosis because she wanted “to figure things out” and “think about it and talk with [my] doctor.” Translation: MONEY.

Anthony Bourdain and Paula Deen War

Anthony Bourdain recently sat down with TV Guide Magazine, and the “No Reservations” star didn’t pull any punches when it came to talking about fellow food personalities such as Rachel Ray, Guy Fieri, and Sandra Lee. But he has the strongest words for Paula Deen, calling her ‘the worst, most dangerous person to America.’ He added: “She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations and she’s proud of the fact that her food is f—— bad for you … plus, her food sucks.” Deen, obviously, was not amused.

HWD Exclusive Interview with ’24 Hour Restaurant Battle’ Host Scott Conant

’24 Hour Restaurant Battle’ has a sneak peek this Sunday (July 18) at 10:00 PM EST on Food Network. The show gives each two-team members 24 hours to open a working restaurant from scratch.

Little old me scored the opportunity to sit down and chat with the show’s host (and my favorite ‘Chopped’ judge I may add) Scott Conant this afternoon for a little information about the show.

Scott joined me from his new restaurant inside the Thompson Hotel in Toronto, where he and his staff are working diligently towards next weekend’s grand opening.

Dame Crista (DC): Tell me a little about the new restaurant in Toronto.

Scott Conant (SC): We’re having staff tastings right now, actually. It’s beautiful. I can’t wait for it to open…which should hopefully be some time next weekend. We had Studio Gaia of New York design it and I feel they really captured a great balance between modern elements and a rustic feel. They also designed my two other restaurants that will open this year in Las Vegas.

DC: On ’24 Hour Restaurant Battle’ one team member takes charge of the kitchen while the other handles the aesthetics of the restaurant. Which do you believe is the more difficult task?

SC: Oh boy! Neither is really easier than the other. It takes two sets of muscles, really. Setting up a dining-room is really tough and at the same time, when you create a menu, you are creating your marketing plan for the restaurant. And there needs to be something in sync between décor and menu.

Yet the kitchen is a nice place to hide! Dealing with customers can often be very difficult!

DC: I am already familiar with you from the show ‘Chopped’ where you sit-in regularly as judge. Will you still be working on that show as well?

SC: Absolutely! We are working on a new season of ‘Chopped’ right now, but opening my restaurants is what is most important right now. I would like to say that I am nicer than I look a TV (he laughs!). I am honest with the chefs because I feel that it’s my obligation to do so!

You can check out an exclusive sneak peek of ’24 Hour Restaurant Battle’ this Sunday July 18 at 10:00 PM EST on Food Network. The show premieres in its regular time slot Wednesday July 21 at 10:00 PM EST. Tune in!

New Food Network Show: 24 Hour Restaurant Battle

Ever wonder how long it takes to get a restaurant started? How about 24 hours?! At least that’s all Food Network’s new show ’24 Hour Restaurant Battle’ thinks it takes!

Hosted by Scott Conant, who you may recognize from ‘Chopped,’ ’24 Hour Restaurant Battle’ is pretty self-explanatory: Each one-hour episode features dueling teams who must conceive, plan, and open their own restaurants in 24 hours. On each team, one person handles front-of-house issues like décor, seating, and service while the other manages back-of-house matters like menu planning, shopping, and cooking. When the doors open, each restaurant serves a group of diners along with Scott and a rotating panel of judges. Based on the restaurant’s concept, execution, and viability, the judges choose a winning team who receive $10,000.

I am seriously hoping they select chefs who can’t stand one another to be on the same team. I wanna see Paula Deen cut someone.

You can catch ’24 Hour Restaurant Battle’ on Food Network WEDNESDAY JULY 21 at 10:00 PM/EST, or you can catch an exclusive SNEAK PEAK JULY 18 at 10:00 PM/EST. You can learn more about the show BY CLICKING HERE.

The Next Food Network Star Hits Hollywood

next-food-network-star-logo

Food Network’s number one series, “The Next Food Network Star,” returns this June with the most exciting and intense season to date. Shot in Los Angeles on a brand-new studio set, season six follows 12 hopefuls competing for the ultimate dream job: his or her own Food Network show. With this coveted prize on the line, the finalists strut their star power and culinary chops for host Bobby Flay and the selection committee to see if they stack up against the competition. Under the mentorship of Giada De Laurentiis, the series kicks off with a two-hour premiere Sunday, June 6th at 9pm ET/PT as finalists get a taste of Hollywood with a trip to Paramount Studios and a six-course lunch for L.A.’s biggest celebrity chef, Wolfgang Puck.

The 12 finalists include: Dzintra Dzenis (Austin, Texas), Doreen Fang (Los Angeles, Calif.), Alexis Hernandez (Clarksville, Ind.), Brianna Jenkins (Atlanta, Ga.), Aria Kagan (Hollywood, Fla.), Herb Mesa (Atlanta, Ga.), Serena Palumbo (New York, N.Y.), Tom Pizzica (San Francisco, Calif.), Aarti Sequeira (Los Angeles, Calif.), Darrell “DAS” Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.), Brad Sorenson (Austin, Texas) and Paul Young (Chicago, Ill.).

This season, the finalists travel to Los Angeles where they are put through the ringer to prove their culinary talent and impress the industry’s biggest stars. Challenges include a crash-course in red-carpet glamour while catering a star-studded MGD 64 after-party with Grammy-winner Colbie Caillat, serving up savory dishes inspired by classic carnival sweets at the Santa Monica Pier, creating and operating lunch trucks on Venice Beach, and using Kellogg’s ® breakfast cereals to cook dinner with breakfast. The contestants must also impress special guest stars Eva Longoria Parker and Todd English by illustrating an “emotion” through a dish at their restaurant, Beso.

All season long, the finalists receive extra insight and encouragement from a host of guest stars including Wolfgang Puck, Paula Deen, Guy Fieri, Rachael Ray, Alton Brown, Duff Goldman, Ted Allen, and Melissa d’Arabian. The selection committee comprised of Bobby Flay and Food Network executives, Bob Tuschman (Senior Vice President, Programming and Production) and Susie Fogelson (Senior Vice President, Marketing, Creative Services & Brand Strategy), narrow the field down until the finale. The winner, revealed during the series finale on Sunday, August 15th at 9pm ET/PT, receives a six-episode show that premieres in August 2010.

Fans receive the “star” treatment online as foodnetwork.com/star plays host to live chats in the ‘Star Lounge’ during each premiere with Food Network hosts and special guests who also provide exclusive Vlogs, fan-favorite voting, robust behind-the-scenes photo galleries and video packages including sneak peeks, recaps, exit interviews and highlight clips from Cooking Channel’s after party series. Viewers are also served Bobby Flay’s “Take Two” recipe fixes in which he modifies a failed recipe from each challenge.

5 Questions With Food Network’s Claire Robinson

claire-robinson-1

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Claire Robinson and her family spent time in St. Augustine, Fla.; Houston; and New Orleans but ultimately settled in Memphis, Tenn. With a multi-ethnic background, Claire cites her French-speaking grandmother as a major influence on her love for food. She graduated from The University of Memphis in 1999 with a B.A. in Communications. After enjoying a variety of post-college jobs, Claire decided to pursue her culinary dreams by moving to New York City and attending The French Culinary Institute; she graduated in November 2005. Along with being an accomplished private chef, Claire spent time working on culinary production teams for several cooking series including Food Network’s “Easy Entertaining with Michael Chiarello” and PBS’ “Everyday Baking for Everyday Food.

In her daytime cooking series, “5 Ingredient Fix,” Claire proves delicious dishes only need five ingredients or fewer making cooking easier, faster and down right irresistible. She shows viewers how to enhance the natural flavors of carefully-selected, fresh ingredients to illustrate her belief that each ingredient should truly stand out in a recipe. With eclectic and elegant menus perfect for every occasion, her straightforward cooking style promotes healthy, seasonal eating as well as stress-free shopping. Claire minimizes fuss and maximizes taste to achieve mouth-watering meals in no time!

You are most known for your 5 ingredient approach to cooking. What are 5 pantry items you keep on hand at all times, and what are 5 must have kitchen tools for you?

Oh wow. Good question. You know, its interesting because I’m actually working on my book right now and I’ve been trying to come up with these because I wanted to have a section about 5 pantry items to make everyone’s life easier. My five ingredient pantry items would be an unbleached all purpose flour, a sugar – now I like to keep it simple and use a granulated sugar, and then a good olive oil – I like to keep one that I would cook with and then one that I would finish with, balsamic vinegar – I use it all the time and I love to reduce it down, and then for my fifth one this is where I’ve been playing. I think those four are the ones I use all the time, and then for the fifth one I’ve been bouncing back and forth for what my solid answer would be and I think for now my fifth one would be another kind oil and that would depend on what you would cook with like a vegetable oil that you would cook with, fry with, grill with. So those are my five, for now. Of course, I always keep salt and pepper in the house. For kitchen tools, you know if you ever noticed I’m pretty bad at working equipment – really klutzy. I live in NYC now, so I don’t have a ton of room for a lot of equipment. A really great spatula, a rubber spatula. I use those all the time. A really great pot or pan that I use all the time. A really great set of knives. You don’t need one of those massive blocks with 13 knives. I use a set of 5 – go figure. Good knives really save time in the kitchen. I would think the other two really depend on who you are. If you like a food processor, then go with a food processor.

Other than the 5 ingredient approach, do you have any other tips and tricks for making cooking easier?

Yes, I would definitely say that people are spending lots of time, and I get this question a lot, that people want exact recipes. Cooking should be an event. You should dedicate your time to having fun and enjoying your time in the kitchen. Read the recipe before you go in the kitchen, then put it away, step away from it. Follow the jist. Unless you’re baking, you never have to follow the exact amount. Enjoy cooking, you know.

claire-robinson-2

Do you currently have any other projects in the works and what can we look forward to on “Food Network Challenge.”

“5 Ingredient Fix,” I’m always shooting a new season of that. I’m actually about ready to shoot a new season. I have a book coming out for “5 Ingredient Fix” coming out October 27th , it’ll be the first book for that. And “Food Network Challenge,” I’m so excited about that. This is the most fun show that I’ve been involved with. Its so different than it was before, and it will continue to get more different. I’ve become more involved where I’ve been carrying the audience through by the hand from the first minute to the end. Its the first time for me in real life to see these cakes and chocolate pieces constructed in front of me. It is so much fun to watch, I was just in awe most of the time. When they are moving those things, it is the most nerve wracking ten seconds of your life.

Martha Stewart Loves Robert Pattinson, Hates Rachel Ray

martha-stewart

Martha Stewart sure did not hold back in an interview with “Nightline” when asked about cooking competitor Rachael Ray. In the interview, Stewart says that she’s not interested in taking shortcuts in the kitchen, whether it be teaching them or taking them. She says Ray, on the other hand, professed that she cannot bake, then proceeded to criticize the Food Network star saying that Ray is not ‘good enough’ for her.

Per PopEater:

“She — just did a new cookbook which is just a re-edit of a lot of her old recipes. She — and that’s not good enough for me. She’s more of an entertainer than she is, with her bubbly personality, than she is a teacher, like me. That’s not what she’s professing to be,” Stewart explains in the ‘Nightline’ segment.

Ouch! Stewart does make a good point though. You don’t watch Ray for her recipes, you watch for entertainment. Stewart then pushed the knife a little bit further into Rays back, claiming that she always tries to publish something that is ‘unique and lasting.’ Is anything ever good enough for the Queen of the Kitchen? Well, yes. Her cookbooks are, actually. She says her books are designed as, ”Something that will fulfill a need in someone’s library,” while Ray’s books are “different.” Just how does Ray react to this? She actually agrees with Stewart!

Per Us:

“Why would it make me mad?” Ray asks. “Her skill set is far beyond mine. That’s simply the reality of it.” Ray adds that “that doesn’t mean that what I do isn’t important too… I don’t consider it needling. I really just think she’s being honest. She does have a better skill set than I do when it comes to producing a beautiful, perfect, high-quality meal.” Says Ray, “I’d rather eat Martha’s than mine, too.”

Hey, at least she admits it! Is Stewart always such a drinker of the haterade? Apparently not, as Kristen Stewart revealed that she may have some heavy competition for the affections of her leading man last night on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Kristen says while filming an appearance on “The Martha Stewart Show” earlier this week, Martha kept changing the topic to Robert Pattinson, revealing she had had a dream about our beloved vampire.

Per Contact:

“All she wanted to do was talk about Rob! She told me she had a dream that she hung out with him. I was like, ‘That’s awesome!’ There was a whole pie segment and I assumed that’s what we were gonna talk about. And she was like, ‘You know, I’m such a fan and I had a dream about Robert the other night.’ I was like, ‘Dude, I should hook you guys up!’ She just said they hung out – I don’t know what goes along with that. I didn’t really push it, I was just like, ‘OK, that’s cool.’ She said he was really down to earth and real and she really liked that – in the dream!”

Well, Sparklepants has expressed his preference for older women on more than one occasion. But who knew Martha was such a cougar! I bet her dream consisted of her sitting down naked in the kitchen with Robert over her knee spanking him with her rubber spatula…
