Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview – Jason Castro

jason-castro-album-cover-1

With his rich tenor voice, distinctive looks, and endearingly innocent charm, Jason Castro won over millions of viewers as a contestant on the seventh season of “American Idol,” parlaying his substantial singer-songwriter appeal into a third-place runner-up finish. He may not have won the competition, but the 22-year-old Texan earned himself a devoted fan base eager to hear what he would do once freed to perform his own songs. Those folks will get their chance with the release of Castro’s self-titled debut album on Atlantic Records, arriving in stores and at all online retailers today.

“I feel like the album really captures my personality,” Jason says. “People got to know me a bit on the show, so I wanted to build on that by including all these songs I’ve written about my life. I wanted to share with people the things that are meaningful to me.”

Though rooted in the classic, melody-minded singer-songwriter tradition, with heart-on-sleeve lyrics and acoustic guitar-driven arrangements, the album brims with toe-tapping pop (first single “Lets Just Fall In Love Again,” “This Heart Of Mine“), strummy folk (“That’s What I’m Here For,” the lilting “If I Were You“), and electrifying rock (“Closer,” “Heart of Stone“) all cleverly balanced with unabashedly emotional tunes like “Love Uncompromised,” “It Matters To Me,” “You Can Always Come Home,” and a stunning version of Leonard Cohen’s‘ “Hallelujah” (which Castro performed on Idol, citing Jeff Buckley’s version as a huge inspiration to him as an artist).

JASON CASTRO” follows Castro’s acclaimed “THE LOVE UNCOMPROMISED EP,” which immediately shot to the Top 5 on the iTunes album chart upon its January release. The five track EP – highlighted by three of the album’s brightest moments, including “You Can Always Come Home,” a tender duet featuring Atlantic labelmate Serena Ryder – was immediately hailed in the New York Times as being “among the most sure-footed records, debut or otherwise, by an ‘Idol’ contestant from any season.”

The Texas-based tunesmith has just wrapped a major US tour, his first full-fledged trek in support of his own music. Jason received rapturous reviews along the way, with the New York Times declaring his set “magnetic…1960s pop with bright guitars, slashed through with a contrarian streak… Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz should be nervous.” A full-scale US tour in support of “JASON CASTRO” will be announced shortly.

Recently, I had the chance to chat with Jason about his debut album, his time on American Idol, and the direction he’s hoping to go in. You can read about it below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music and what sparked that interest?

That’s hard to say. I’ve been around music since I was born, I mean, my dad plays the guitar and I can remember jamming out to the Beach Boys and Elvis since I was 5. As I got older it became the way it made me feel and the energy you got from it. I started off as a drummer and became a singer when I was in college. I love music, its very inspiring to me.

You were on American Idol Season 7 – What was that experience like and looking back on it now, would you recommend it to others?

I definitely loved being on American Idol. It was the experience of a lifetime. I got to see things I won’t get to see again, even now. It was awesome and I would definitely recommend it, but not without warnings. I mean, people should go into it expecting some sort of rejection and not putting your life into it. You shouldn’t expect to jump start your career out of it because alot of times it doesn’t happen but it is a great opportunity and I would recommend it.

With your debut cd coming out, how would you describe the sound of your music, and what makes you feel like your album is different from the other artists in your genre?

I would call it Folk/Pop/Modern/Soft Rock. I think every artist is unique to its own, putting themselves out there into their music. What makes my album different is that its a continuation to myself, and to my time on Idol. People who followed me then would get to see the next step I’m taking. Its a living, breathing thing to me.

New Music Friday – All Time Low

Pop-punk foursome “All Time Low” formed in Baltimore in 2003 around singer/guitarist Alex Gaskarth and guitarist Jack Barakat before adding bassist Zack Merrick and drummer Rian Dawson to round out their band and rowdy live show, which often included silly string and beach balls. Balancing homework and other teenage adventures, the guys managed to tour across the east coast and the south during school breaks. They released the four-song EP “The Three Words to Remember in Dealing with the End” through the local label “Emerald Moon” in 2004 and followed up with a full-length album, “The Party Scene,” a year later. Before graduating high school in 2006, they signed a record deal with “Hopeless Records” and re-recorded songs from their debut album and included two new songs for their EP “Put Up or Shut Up.” The EP entered both the Top Independent Albums and Top Heatseekers charts. They’ve shared the stage with national headliners such as Motion City Soundtrack, Acceptance, The Early November, The Receiving End of Sirens, The Academy Is…, Plain White T’s, Spitalfied, and many more.

In 2007, All Time Low released “So Wrong, It’s Right,” which entered the Billboard 200 at number 62. The band was eventually selected as Alternative Press Magazine’s “Band of the Year” for 2008. While writing for a third album, they collaborated with Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus and a host of other producers. Their third album “Nothing Personal” was released in July, debuting at number four on the Billboard 200. It was revealed in November 2009 that the band had signed to major label “Interscope Records.” The band also announced that they would have a song featuring on the soundtrack for the upcoming film “Alice in Wonderland.”

Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t)” is the second single from their new studio album, reaching as high as #21 on iTunes during its first week of availability. It also became their first Hot 100 charting song, debuting at #67. You can view the video above.

Tokio Hotel – World Behind My Wall

Tokio Hotel is a German band founded in Magdeburg, Germany in 2001 consisting identical brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz, along with Gustav Schafer and Georg Listing. The four met after a live show in a Magdeburg club where Listing and Schafer, who knew each other from music school, watched from the audience while the Kaulitz brothers played on the stage. They formed a band and soon began playing in talent shows and small concerts under the name Devilish, being discovered by music producer Peter Hoffmann after Bill’s participation in a children’s Star Search in 2003. They then decided to change their name from Devilish to Tokio Hotel: “Tokio”, the German spelling of the Japanese city Tokyo, due to a love of the city, and “Hotel” due to their constant touring and living in hotels.

Its been quite the busy month for Tokio Hotel; Not only are they featured in the new Verizon Droid commercial their song “Human Connect To Human” (Check out the sci-fi themed spot here), but they also won the award for Best Group earlier this month at MTV’s European Music Awards where they also performed their new single “World Behind My Wall.” This guitar-charged ballad is their new, official focus track in the US and follows “Automatic” as the second single off of their latest album, “Humanoid.” Check out the song above then head on over to iTunes to pick up their latest album.

New Music Friday (A Wee Bit Early!) – Carney

The brothers Carney, Reeve and Zane, form the hard-riffing, blues-singing core of the rock ‘n roll band, Carney. Carney’s debut music video for “Love Me Chase Me” follows the life & death of a character named Mr. Green. Evan Rachel Wood guest stars in the video opposite Reeve Carney, Broadways next Spiderman. She is also starring in the upcoming “Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark” Broadway Production, playing Peter Parker’s love interest Mary Jane Watson. The video was shot on the set of HBO’s “Carnivale” in the California desert.

“Love Me Chase Me” is available now on iTunes. Their final L.A. area show of the year is this Saturday, November 28th at the El Rey Theatre – Tickets can be purchased here.

Check out their interesting and amazing video above. I’m sure we’ll hear lots more from them in the new year!

New Music Friday – The Script

The Script is a three-piece Irish pop rock band from Dublin, Ireland consisting of members Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan, and Glen Power. They are a whole new brand of celtic soul, blending ‘hip hop lyrical flow with pop melodiousness, state-of-the-art R’n'B production with anthemic rock dynamics, classic song construction with gritty contemporary narratives.’

Per Total Assault:

“Irish people have soul,” according to Danny. “It comes from generations of pain, and generations of understanding emotion to be able to physically get that in a solid sound.”

The Script received an award at the World Music Awards for ‘Best Selling Irish Act‘ of 2008, and the ‘Best Band‘ award at the BalconyTV Music Video Awards 2008. They were also nominated for a number of awards at the 2009 Meteor Ireland Music Awards along with a nomination for ‘Best Album‘ at the Choice Music Prize. After reaching #15 on the charts with their debut single “We Cry,” their 2nd single “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” hit the #2 spot. Their debut album, “The Script,” was released in August 2008 and went straight to #1 on iTunes UK & Ireland. Their 3rd single “Breakeven” was released in November 2008, and have just released the video for the single. They are currently on tour with American Idol’s Season 7 Winner David Cook, but will take time out of their busy schedule to make appearances on “It’s On With Alexa Chung” on November 16th and “The Late Show with David Letterman” on November 17th.

Check out the video for “Breakeven” above, and then swing by iTunes to pick up their self-titled debut album. I love this song. If you have ever been through a bad breakup – and honestly, who hasn’t? – then you can relate to this song. Its beautiful and it touches me – possibly because it speaks the truth.

While there is not much information floating around in cyber space about Jason Walker just yet, I still wanted to profile him for todays “New Music Friday.” His current single “Down” was featured on last weeks “The Vampire Diaires” and is quickly becoming one of the most sought after songs since the episode. He co-wrote the song with his friend Molly Reed, who is also the female singing with him. Walker has also written songs for other artists such as Clay Aiken, Luke Menard, Nevertheless, and Remedy Drive. Walker is married and lives in Tennessee with his wife. He just wrapped up a mini-tour with friend & American Idol finalist Chris Sligh, playing shows all over the south-east. He has just finished recording his EP, and its available now to download on Amazon and Itunes.

See – not much information is known about this guy just yet, but his song is absolutely beautiful and well worth your time listening to. You can check out the song “Down” above.

Lyrics to “Down” by Jason Walker

I don’t know where I’m at
I’m standing at the back
And I’m tired of waiting
Waiting here in line, hoping that I’ll find what I’ve been chasing.

I shot for the sky
I’m stuck on the ground
So why do I try, I know I’m going to fall down
I thought I could fly, so why did I drown?
Never know why it’s coming down, down, down.

Not ready to let go
Cause then I’d never know
What I could be missing
I’m missing way too much
So when do I give up what I’ve been wishing for

I shot for the sky
I’m stuck on the ground
So why do I try, I know I’m going to fall down
I thought I could fly, so why did I drown?
Never know why it’s coming down, down, down.
Oh I’m going down, down, down
Can’t find another way around
And I don’t want to hear the sound, of losing of what I never found.

I shot for the sky
I’m stuck on the ground
So why do I try, I know I’m going to fall down
I thought I could fly, so why did I drown?
I never know why it’s coming down, down, down.
I shot for the sky
I’m stuck on the ground
So why do I try, I know I’m going to fall down
I thought I could fly, so why did I drown?
Oh it’s coming down, down, down.
