New Music Friday – Il Volo

Move over American Idol – it’s Italy’s time to shine. In May 2009, three fresh-faced teenagers, Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble, appeared on the popular Italian talent show Ti Lascio Una Canzone and dazzled viewers with their flawless rendition of the Italian standard “O Sole Mio.” It was at this moment Il Volo (which means “the flight” in English) was born. Their self-titled debut album, released in Italy this past November, has already been certified platinum, and the group will debut their album to the US on April 12th.

Piero (17), Ignazio (16) and Gianluca (16) recorded Il Volo in Los Angeles, Rome, and at London’s famed Abbey Road studios with a number of renowned producers including Humberto Gatica, who has worked with the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, and Celine Dion. The album is a stellar showcase for the three young singers’ astonishing vocal talent, as they interpret a range of both new and traditional, classically influenced pop songs, including single “O Sole Mio,” “Smile” (popularized by Nat King Cole), a medley of Ennio Morricone songs from the soundtracks of his movies like Once Upon a Time in America, “La Luna Hizo Esto” (written specifically for Il Volo by multi-platinum songwriter Diane Warren), and more.

Il Volo made their American television debut this week singing “O Sole Mio” on CBS’ ‘The Talk,’ and had the audience jumping out of their seats for a standing ovation. For a limited time, get a free download of the track by visiting IlVoloMusic.com. Fans can also preorder the album via Amazon or through the official website, where you can also get to know the group through a short introductory piece and watch the official music video for “O Sole Mio.”

They may be young but Il Volo’s mission is clear: “We want to share our love for this music with people all over the world, including kids our own age.” That they say “would be our dream come true.”

We all are captivated by what Kanye West has to say on Twitter! Right?! Well trust me – his tweets are much more entertaining when put to the music of Josh Groban who teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel last night for a fantastic comedy bit. Kimmel introduced a commercial for a “new album” that Groban was promoting, and said advertisement revealed that Groban had created an entire album of Kanye’s greatest tweets set to music.

This is hilarious! Can I have this CD, please? Now I want to follow Kanye on Twitter!

New Music Friday – Debi Nova

With six Grammy Award nominations and a number one dance single under her belt, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Debi Nova is ready to make her mark on the rest of the world. In March 2010, Decca Records will release Nova’s genre-defying, debut album “Luna Nueva.” The album is an electrifying combination of irresistible Latin rhythms and potent pop smarts that showcase this vivacious artist’s considerable musical gifts (she plays piano, guitar, bass and more) as well as her rich Latina heritage.

Per MySpace:

“I started taking piano lessons at four and by the time I was twelve I knew I wanted to pursue a career in music” stated Debi.

Produced by multi-Grammy nominated Marius de Vries (Madonna, Josh Groban) and Gustavo Santaolalla (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Babel“), Luna Nueva is a labor of love, long in the making, which not only showcases Nova’s electrifying vocals and musicianship, but her songwriting talents as well. The first single is the playful soca/hip-hop inspired “Drummer Boy.”

Already a massive star in her native Costa Rica, Debi has toured with both Ricky Martin and Sergio Mendes as a featured vocalist and has performed for more than 8 million people globally. As a songwriter, the Costa Rican beauty has written hit songs for Belinda and RBD, two of Latin Americas biggest artists. Since the beginning of the year Debi’s been in the studio aiming to create a sound that blends all the influences and musical experiences she’s had. Combining her passion for Bossa Nova, Hip Hop and lots in between, a sound that Debi affectionately terms “Tropical Soul.” You can learn more about Debi’s process of recording an album in both English and Spanish in her new EPK above, and click here to check out her first single “Drummer Boy.”

Katy Perry and Josh Groban Dating

The memaws are not going to like this one. It seems that Katy Perry and Josh Groban are an item. That’s right folks. The “I Kissed a Girl” songstress and the prince of contemporary opera are hooking-up.

Katy, who recently came off a three-year relationship with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy, was recently linked to Paris Hilton’s ex, Benji Madden.

Groban reportedly ended his three-year relationship with “Mad Men” actress January Jones recently as well.

Via MTV UK:

“She’s hooked up with the ‘You Raise Me Up’ star and they’ve been secretly dating. They’ve been trying to keep it very low profile.”

This duo is right up there with Bea Arthur hooking up with Robert Pattinson. Something about a chick who performs dressed as fruit sucking-face with the guy whose music is piped through funeral homes across the US makes me giggle. I look forward to lots of paparazzi shots of these two doing weird yet completely normal things, like grocery shopping.
