Katie Couric To Return To ‘Today Show’

We reported that Katie Couric is likely not renewing her contract with the CBS Evening News when it expires in June, as well as what appears to be Couric’s former co-host on the ‘Today Show,’ Matt Lauer’s potential exit from that program as well.

However, before all that goes down, Couric and Lauer will reunite on the ‘Today Show’ when Matt interviews Couric as she promotes her new book, The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons From Extraordinary Lives.

The book, a collection of interviews Couric has done over her years as a journalist will be released this Tuesday. Her appearance on the ‘Today Show’ is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Couric is in talks with former ‘Today Show’ producer Jeff Zucker, to star in a sydicated daytime talk show.

And Lauer may be joining her.

“According to the WSJ [Wall Street Journal], Zucker — who also worked with Lauer on Today –has been discussing the idea of reuniting the two, who hosted Today together from 1997, when Lauer joined the program, until Couric left in 2006.

However, it’s far from being a done deal. For starters, it’s not likely that NBC parent Comcast Corp. will let Lauer go so easily once his contract expires. In addition, the WSJ’s sources said they weren’t sure whether Couric’s discussions with Lauer will progress beyond just talk.”

Matt Lauer Leaving ‘The Today Show’

In addition to Katie Couric leaving CBS, there are reports that Matt Lauer is leaving NBC’s ‘The Today Show.’ Lauer allegedly told his bosses he won’t renew his contract when it expires on Dec. 31st 2012. This would make for quite a shakeup in the TV world with so many big-name personalities leaving their current posts. (In addition to Lauer and Couric, Meredith Vieira is also leaving ‘The Today Show’ in September and Glenn Beck announced he will be leaving Fox News at the end of June.)

Per NY Daily News:

If the report is true, Lauer, 53, is giving his bosses an unusually long period to prepare for his exit.

The question now is where will Matt Lauer go? Maybe Oprah has a secret plan in order to hire Beck, Lauer, Couric, and Viera for her O Network? Or could he be thinking about re-teaming with his former ‘Today’ show co-host Couric and his former ‘Today’ show executive producer Jeff Zucker? It has been widely speculated that Couric is expected to leave ‘CBS Evening News‘ and launch her own talk show with Zucker. Things that make you go hmm…

But don’t start crying into your morning coffee just yet, however… NBC is currently denying reports that their morning team consisting of Lauer and Vieira are exiting, saying that Lauer has a long-term contract with the show, and dismissing it as nothing more than speculation. I guess for now we’ll just have to thank our lucky stars that Al Roker is staying put. Right? …Right?

Katie Couric Quits ‘CBS Evening News’

This piece of tv anchor lusciousness is dropping her CBS Evening News gig. She and her sweet, sweet swerve will be grinding out a final goodbye as she scored her own syndicated show.

Couric and CBS have been ready to call it quits for awhile, but it is now final according to the Associated Press. Her contract expires on June 4th which may not become her departure date. Negotiations are still ongoing. However, she might not be going too far as she was in talks with CBS, NBC and CNN for her own show. No official word on which network scored her, but an announcement should come in the next few weeks.

Russ Mitchell, Scott Pelley and Harry Smith are all in the running to replace the chair left vacant by Katie.
