HollywoodDame Exclusive Interview – Semi Precious Weapons

Voted “Best Band in New York” by readers of the Village Voice last year, Semi Precious Weapons are a band that’s thrilled to say they got to play all-ages gigs at CBGBs, but wouldn’t necessarily feel out of place at the John Varvatos store (which recently took over the lease from the legendary music club).

The band’s not-so-dirty secret, and the reason why the songs are as accomplished and concise as they are bloody and bombastic, is that all four members are whip-sharp musicians. Singer Justin Tranter, bassist Cole Whittle and drummer Dan Crean met when studying music at school in Boston. Introduced through a producer friend, the foursome joined up for good after they met guitarist Stevy Pyne. “We heard him play and were blown away,” says Justin.

A classic rock obsessive, Whittle encouraged Justin to make SPW more grandiose. “We wanted to make filthy party hits; bring the party back to rock’n’roll and back to New York City.” Whittle says. “The songs Justin had already written were great songs, but they didn’t have super-catchy choruses. I kind of thought, let’s write songs that should be on the radio.” Whittle’s new riffs allowed the band to play as hard as they wanted and the lyrics to be as over-the-top as Justin wanted.

Live, Semi Precious Weapons are in a class of their own. The band is known for their energy filled, circus-like live shows. LA Weekly describes SPW as ‘gun-blazing bitch-rock. Weapons are a hybrid of Bowie-esque stage seduction and Sex Pistols-style insolence.’ Bass player Cole Whittle thrashes about stage with his ultimate fighting moves, while drummer Dan Crean fiercely pummels the drums. “Every time Justin sings I can’t pay my rent but I’m f*****g gorgeous, every face in the crowd lights up,” adds Crean. The band has been engaging fans across the country, recently selling out shows at Canada’s NXNE Music Festival. Not to mention the shows in Paris and London where Kate Moss showed up, and The Guardian newspaper called SPW “the most important band in America.”

Part hedonist and part satirist, Justin’s lyrics are both tongue-in-cheek and a sincere expression of his core philosophy. The sentiment of the aforementioned ‘I can’t pay my rent but I’m f*****g gorgeous’ which he sings at the start of “Semi Precious Weapons” has made such an impact on the band’s followers that they now drown him out at the start of every show. ‘Sometimes I bleed because red is a good color for me,’ he sings in “Rock’N’Roll Never Looked So Beautiful,” a slow-burn epic on the order of “November Rain” or “Champagne Supernova.” “If you decide you look amazing, then you are,” he says. “If you say you’re the most beautiful, you are.” Don’t let the clothes or make-up fool you – Justin is neither goth nor emo (nor a drag queen), just a guy who gets along well with his inner glamazon. “People get so upset that we like ourselves,” he says. “They want bands to talk about how tortured they are, and how much fun they’re not having.”

Justin also fills that role by making jewelry, a business that he only started ‘cause the band needed some merch to sell at early gigs. “My mom’s an engagement ring designer, so when it was time to get a day job at 18, a jewelry store is where I went,” he says. “I knew where I could go in the wholesale fashion district to buy pieces to put stuff together.” His necklaces based on the band’s gun and hearts logo quickly blossomed into Fetty Brooklyn, now a three-tiered line (Fetty, Semi Precious Weapons and Fame) available at Barney’s, Urban Outfitters and Fred Segal, as well as home-base boutique Alter. “We paid for our record with jewelry money,” Justin says. Justin has also branched out into shoes, with a limited edition made for DKNY.

The cool thing about this band is that everybody is themselves,” says Crean. “Justin wears his high heels every day. It’s not a stage performance choice. It’s what makes him feel good when he gets up in the morning.” Says Justin, “A man in heels and make-up is still quite a shock to most of the world. I think it looks fantastic, some people get angry. Which for rock’n’roll is kind of a perfect combination.” And it turns out Justin is willing to admit that Semi Precious Weapons are like everybody else in one respect. “We’re playing rock’n’roll as good as anybody that’s ever played rock’n’roll,” he says. “We just look better doing it.”

Earlier today, I had the chance to talk with Justin from Semi Precious Weapons about how they broke into the music industry, what goals they have lined out for themselves, and the one accomplishment he hopes to make above all others. You can read about that below.

When did you first realize you had an interest in music and what sparked that interest?

Well, I think really it began for us all when we were around 10 to 12 years old. Just hearing bands like Guns and Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers and wanting to be like them. To be in a rock band. It was exciting

How did you break into the music industry?

We all met back in music school and afterwards we moved to New York as friends and then figured ‘Ya now what, F— it!’ and started a band. We’ve been a band for 4 years and its been a long 4 years. Our record is out today and before that we played in just about every bar across America and now we’re touring with Lady Gaga. We were just playing as many shows as we can and meet as many people as we can and never giving up. We have the type of music that you either love or hate but no matter what you’re talking about it!

How would you describe the sound of your music and what makes you feel that your album is different from other artists in your genre?

Rock and Roll. Some people want to define us as Glam Rock and that’s fine with me. We’re compared to AC/DC, Queen, and David Bowie. We’re just straight up Rock and Roll with filthy and glamorous lyrics. We’re showing people that you can still dance to rock and roll, you can party to rock and roll, and you can have sex to rock and roll.

What are some of your plans for promoting your album besides touring?

I’m very active in Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace. Touring endlessly, playing after-parties, and just making sure people hear us whether they love or hate us.

What are some short term and long term goals you have lined out for yourself? What’s next for you?

Short term is the Monster Ball Tour and have as many G–Damn people buy the album as possible. Long term we want to be the most loved band in the world and the most hated band in the world.

Have you written or created a song that didn’t make the album cut that you wished would have?

I just wrote a new song called “Geniuses Don’t Need To” that is absolutely beautiful. I was shocked at how fantastic it turned out. But I’m not upset that its not on the album.

Do you have any musical pet peeves?

Things that are average. Music should be urgent and exciting. I’m not saying it has to be loud and filthy. It can be soft and sensitive as well. But just not average.
S

Besides music, what are your favorite thing to do? What keeps you grounded?

Well for me, I’ve always thought that I was better than everyone else since I was 14 (laughs.) Just reading things about me, being a man who’s in high heels, and seeing where people have wrote that they hope I die or am killed, that pretty much keeps me grounded.

What do you miss most, besides family and friends, while you are out traveling and touring?

That’s a tough question for me because my family and friends are what I miss most when I’m traveling and touring because they inspire me to make music. But I would have to say what I miss most would be my collection of porcelain monkeys.

What is one accomplishment you hope to make above all others in your life and career?

I want to inspire lots and lots of people to love themselves.

What would you say is your favorite song on the album and why?

Oh, I can’t pick just one because I have two! My two favorite songs on the album is “Statues of Ourselves” because of my love for my family and my friends and then “Leave Your Pretty To Me” because it means so much to me. Its so personal and heartbreaking and no one thinks that I can sing like that!

NFL Star Chris Henry Tragically Dies at 26

chris-henry-dead-at-26

Tragedy fell upon the NFL early this morning. Cincinnati Bengals Wide Receiver Chris Henry passed away this morning after sustaining injuries suffered after he fell from a moving pickup truck driven by his fiancee Loleini Tonga yesterday in Charlotte, N.C. Henry died at 6:36 a.m. at Carolinas Medical Center, where he had been taken early yesterday afternoon. Police haven’t released a cause of death.

Chris Henry was severely injured and was listed in a critical condition after falling out of the back of a moving pick-up truck following a heated argument with Tonga. She got in a pick-up truck and drove off, with Henry running after her and hopping into the bed of the truck. The two continued fighting until his accident when Henry “came out” of the back of the vehicle about a half-mile away from his fiancees’ parents house. When police and paramedics responded to the scene, police said Henry had suffered life-threatening injuries, including severe head trauma. He was then transported to a local hospital. No charges have been immediately filed, although authorities are at the scene conducting a criminal investigation to assess if he fell or was thrown off the truck.

Per Fox Sports:

“The domestic situation continued between the operator and Mr. Henry,” the police said in a statement. “At some point while she was driving, Mr. Henry came out of the back of the vehicle.”

According to a statement released by the Bengals, Henry and Tonga were to be married in March. Tonga’s MySpace page also made several references to the expected nuptials, including the purchase of her dress and wedding rings. Police haven’t released details on their dispute. However, homicide detectives were called to the scene of the accident to investigate. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, such a move is typical procedure when the department responds to an accident involving life-threatening injuries.

Drafted in 2005, Henry is no stranger to problems off the field. He was arrested several times during his professional career, including arrests for DUI, marijuana possession, and assault, before being released by the Bengals in 2007 and then re-signed to a two-year contract with the team before the 2008 season. After the Bengals’ owner gave Henry a second chance, Henry seemed to have straightened his life out, staying out of trouble and focusing his off time on his family. He had been on injured reserve with the Bengals since Nov. 9 due to a dislocated forearm and had been spending his time away from the team with Tonga and their children.

Per ESPN:

“He was good at what he did as a player, he was a teammate to our players and a friend to almost all of us in the building,” Bengals president Mike Brown said at a news conference Thursday at the team’s headquarters. “We knew him in a way that [was not consistent] with his public persona. We liked him. He had worked through troubles in his life … to a point where he was going to have the future we all wanted for him and that he wanted for himself. At the time of his tragedy he was running to daylight.”

Henry leaves behind his fiancee and three children: 3-year old Seini, 2-year old Chris Jr., and 10-month old DeMarcus. He was 26 years old. An unfortunate end to a troubled life that seemed to be on the mend over the past year. Our sympathies are with the family of Chris Henry and his fiancee. Family, friends, and fans will miss him.

New Music Friday – Hodges

Hailing from Forth Worth, Texas, Hodges is an emerging singer/songwriter who has found a musical home among others who try and tell a story through their song. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty recognized this when he recently signed Hodges to his RTel imprint on Epic Records. Hodges attributes his vocal strength to his mother, a former RCA Records recording artist. His undeniable ability to craft a melody stems from his father, a Julliard-trained musician, who taught Hodges the importance of sound songwriting.

Per Myspace:

“My influences are really the artists who know how to take the universal themes of songwriting and make them their own,” says Hodges.

Hodges has a wide range of influences, ranging from Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty to U2 and Peter Gabriel. If you are a fan of the tv show “Criminal Minds,” then you probably have heard his song “My Side Of The Story,” which incidentally is also the name of his debut album. It has been some time since the music industry has produced a singer/song writer with this kind of talent for writing ballads. His ballads range from mellow to having a rock edge leaving his audiences able to feel the emotions through the songs that he sings. While he has no official videos out for his music, you can watch an acoustic performance of his song “My Side Of The Story” above.

New Music Friday – Adele

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known professionally as just Adele, is an English singer who describes her musical style as “heartbroken soul.” She began singing at the age of 4 when she became obsessed with voices, an obsession that she says is still ongoing. Some of her influences includes Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, who she says she stumbled upon on accident while a teenager looking through cds in a local record store.

Adele wrote her first record, “Hometown Glory” when she was only 16 years old. During her teenage years she recorded a demo and gave it to her friend who eventually put it on MySpace where it became very successful. Adele then got a record deal through MySpace, but at first didn’t believe it was real because the only record company she knew was Virgin Records. In 2007, Adele was awarded with the first ever Brit Awards Critics’ Choice Award. She then later signed to independent music label XL Recordings, which in January 2008 released her second single “Chasing Pavements.” The singer has said that the song was written after a night on the town with her ex-boyfriend, who she realized wasn’t worth pursuing anymore.

At the Grammy nomination concert last December, the Jonas Brothers told MTV News that they were big fans of her music. Adele, who performed at the Grammys with country act Sugarland, was up for four awards and won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award in addition to being named the Best New Artist. Her album was certified as Gold in February 2009 by the Recording Industry Association of America selling over 230,000 copies in the United States during the first quarter of 2009, ranking it fourth among international artists. Her first single, “Hometown Glory” has been re-released as her fourth, and latest, single. It has been widely featured on United Kingdom and United States television shows including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “One Tree Hill.” Adele wrote the song in 10 minutes after her mother tried to persuade her to leave her home town of West Norwood in London for college. You can watch the video for the song above.

Twilight Saga: New Moon Soundtrack and New Movie Stills – Photos

new-moon-movie-stills-pic-11

All good things come to those who wait? Naaaahhhhh. The “New Moon” soundtrack was set to be released next Tuesday, but now it’s become one of the rare albums to have its release date pushed up. Summit Entertainment issued a release saying “due to overwhelming and unprecedented demand,” the soundtrack will come out this Friday!

Adding to the great news, Myspace announced earlier this week that starting yesterday the site will premiere songs from the album on its official New Moon profile, allowing fans to listen to all 15 tracks in their entirety legally. Led by Death Cab for Cutie’s with the official song for the movie titled “Meet Me on the Equinox“, the soundtrack album is made up solely of “original and exclusive” songs. Muse, who contributed to the first movies soundtrack, is making a return with another track titled “I Belong to You (New Moon)“. The line-up also include Thom Yorke, The Killers, and OK Go. Regardless of your level of affection for vampires who sparkle, the album has been getting pretty decent reviews and may be worth paying attention to even if you’re not swept into the whole “Twilight” hysteria. “New Moon” will open on November 20th, giving us fan enough time to reread the book with the soundtrack blaring in the background. Twi-hards, you now have 35 days from today to get this done!

In other related news, the official soundtrack for the first movie in the franchise, “Twilight.” is nominated in the category for favorite soundtrack at this years AMA’s, alongside the soundtracks for “Hannah Montana: The Movie” and “Hannah Montana 3.” If you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, some of the Twilight soundtrack artist include Paramore

with the movies official song “Decode“, Robert Pattinson, and Muse - just to name a few. The awards show will take place on ABC on November 22nd, just two days after The “Twilight Saga: New Moon” movie is released, and voting is still ongoing.

This is one franchise that has no signs of slowing down. “Overwhelming and unprecedented demand” is every movie exec’s dream. So be prepared for a few more years of Robert Pattinson and sparkling vampires. You have been warned.

New Music Friday – Dead By Sunrise

Out Of Ashes,” the debut from the side project of Linkin Park’s frontman Chester Bennington’s new band, is here. Dead by Sunrise started to form in 2005 while Bennington was writing songs for Linkin Park’s “Minutes to Midnight” Album. The band also features Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh (from Orgy/Julien-K), bassist Brandon Belsky, drummer Elias Anda (also from Julien-K), and keyboardist Anthony Valcic.

Per Dead By Sunrise:

“I came up with a few songs that felt and sounded really good, but I knew they weren’t right stylistically for Linkin Park. They were darker and moodier than anything I’d come up with for the band. So I decided to work on them on my own rather than turn them over and have them transformed into Linkin Park tracks,” says Bennington.

The band’s name, which was previously “Snow White Tan,” reflects the time during the album’s recording in which the band was living a ‘really self destructive lifestyle’ and weren’t sure they were going to make it to the next day. Bennington says the albums’ name is from ‘coming out of that self-destructive path and rising from the ashes.’ Back on May 10, 2008, the band performed three songs, including the song “Morning After,” at the 13th anniversary party for Club Tattoo in Arizona. The song was written by Bennington and originally performed on December 9, 2001 at the Live in Berlin concert. This was the first time that he had officially performed the song under a new name.

Recording of the band’s debut album began in July 2008 after touring for Linkin Park had finished. “Crawl Back In” is the first official single off the album, followed by “Let Down.” Dead by Sunrise’s MySpace page is featuring the video for the band’s first single, and will hold an exclusive listening party for its debut album on their page this week. Fans will be able to stream the album, which will be released by on October 13th, in its entirety on Myspace from October 8th through the 10th. MySpace will direct users to the listening party via links on both the site’s homepage and its music page. They are scheduled to perform at The Gramercy Theatre in New York City on October 14th, and at the Roxy in Los Angeles on October 19th. You can watch the video for the song “Crawl Back In” above. Lindsay Lohan Converting to Judaism

Oy vey. Let’s hope this one is a rumor.

Lindsay Lohan is converting to Judaism for her girlfriend, Samantha Ronson. They have been experiencing some rocky roads (mmm….ice cream) in their relationship for years now. As an attempt to prove her undying love for Ronson, Lohan is said to be switching to the Jewish faith to show her devotion to her lady love.

Via Mirror:

“LiLo visited a London synagogue with her DJ girlfriend on Friday. And then she returned to the same place of worship in South Kensington for more yesterday – as Samantha’s official date for the bar mitzvah of her half-brother Joshua Ronson.

And Lindsay showed she’s really becoming part of the family by joining in with the post-bar mitzvah lunch in London’s Mandarin Oriental hotel.”

The report also states that she updated her Facebook profile to announce her conversion. The update read: “I’m converting.”

My apologies to the Jewish faith.

Robert Pattinson and Nikki Reed Love Rumors

If you’re a Myspace and a “Twilight” fan, most likely you have a couple of fan pages for the actors listed in your friends list. If so, then you’ve probably seen the statement made yesterday by Kristen Stewart. Supposedly, Stewart confirmed on her Myspace yesterday that Robert Pattinson and Nikki Reed are dating, and that Sparklepants does indeed have a Myspace page. She even also admitted that early on she and Rob did so-called date but they broke up because of the haters. Uh-huh, sure, okay.

Kristen is dating Michael Angarano and has so for 3-plus years. Wonder what he’d have to say about that? I’m here to debunk the rumors that not only has Rob not dated Kristen or Nikki, but also that they three actors DO NOT have Myspace pages.

Per Kris-Stewart.Org:

“No, Kristen does not have a Myspace page, a Facebook page, a Twitter page, or any page of the sorts. Any pages claiming to be here should be considered fake. Please do not give out any personal information about yourself to these people claiming to be Kristen Stewart for your own personal safety.”

Per Robert Pattionson Online:

“A few weeks ago, we told you about myspaces that were claiming to be Rob, and how we told you Rob did not have an official myspace. Now, our affiliates over at Robert-Pattinson.co.uk have gotten an official statement from Rob’s management that Rob does NOT have any online presence. Here’s what Rob’s management says: Rob has neither an official nor personal page on Myspace, Facebook or any other networking site. His fans should not be fooled by anyone representing themselves as Rob or claiming that they have a sanctioned Robert Pattinson site. These are all false. His management team is currently working with Robert to come up with a page on Myspace for the fans that will hopefully be up and running in the coming weeks. When this does happen there will be an announcement made on his official online site for the fans.”

Per Nikki Reed’s Official Facebook:

“Nikki does NOT have an official MySpace. Any you see claiming to be her are fake.”

So there you have it. An official statement from all 3 management teams for the actors stating that they do not – I repeat, they DO NOT – have any sort of a Myspace page at all. Do a google search for a Myspace page with their names and you are guaranteed to come up with at least a couple dozen pages claiming to be the official page, or the “real” person. Don’t believe me? Check out Thefanproject.synthasite.com or their official Myspace page at Myspace.com/thefanproject. They are a group who are dedicated to the privacy protection of loyal fans of celebrities world-wide. Their main focus is fishing out the fake pages and proving them to be just that – fake – then having them shut down. Their sites list each and every fake Myspace page of the celebrities that they have come across so far. So since the pages are fake, then it is to also be assumed that Robert did not ever date Kristen and that Robert is not currently dating Nikki. Please, don’t believe the rumors floating around or believe any social community site claiming to be real unless you hear an official statement from their management team.

Ryan Gosling’s ’In the Room Where You Sleep’ – Video

In The Room Where You Sleep

[Ryan Gosling’s ’In the Room Where You Sleep’ - Video]

Sexy adds some music to the resume. Ryan Gosling has created a little band that call themselves “Dead Man’s Bones.” He provides the vocals and plays the piano while his friend, Zach Shields, works the drums.

The band’s focus in on “Indie Gothic Rock” that sounds eerily like Jim Morrison Elvis hybrid. Dead Man’s Bones recorded an album in Tel Aviv. The band is currently promoting via Myspace. Gosling and Sheilds site their influences as “disney haunted mansion, doo wop and 60s girl groups.” An initial tour date is also planned. They will be in Texas on March 21st for a showcase.

Beyonce Lied, Never Attended Hudson’s Family Funeral

Ohhhhhh….The proverbial human waste has hit the fan. Beyonce has been caught in a lie. After Jennifer Hudson lost her mother, brother in nephew in a tragic event, many reached out to support her. But…Beyonce WAS NOT one of them according to “Superstar James” who is said to be a very close friend of Hudson’s.

He wrote a very angry message letting everyone know the real situation via Myspace. Since the word began to spread, he has made the post private.

“How evil can someone be?

So i wasnt going to write about this but it is really really bugging me. Especially when people are calling my phone saying how nice it was of Beyonce to come to the funeral and show her support. And i have to sit back and hold everything i wanna say inside. But i cant do it no more. Beyonce did not come to the funeral nor did she call, text, send a card or hell send a damn email. If there are millions of people who are leaving Jennifer and Julia and myself messages and sending there prayers and condelences and these people don’t even know them why couldnt she?

Every singer that Jennifer admires and had been a role model for her growing up even until now has called, from Aretha to Shirley Murdock to even present day singers like Chrisette Michelle. And yall know how much Jennifer loves Beyonce and she couldn’t even have her assistant call or nothing. But yet her camp is allowing her to recieve credit for coming to the funeral and being there for Jennifer and her family. Bullshit!

This just pisses me off. Once again thanks to everyone who has be there for us. And sorry if i offended any of Beyonce fans by writing this but if i just couldn’t keep sitting back and reading articles and emails and having my phone ring about how nice it was of Beyonce to come out!”

Egads. This is not cool by any means if it is true. The story has validity to it. It was beyond clear that B was green with envy at the success of Jennifer’s role on “Dreamgirls.” I can picture her backstage…. “Bitch step out of my spotlight and away from my 100 Calorie Snack Packs!”
