Obviously this is spoiler-riffic. Last night we learned who the Top Chef 2010 winner is. The final 3 contestants, Angelo, Ed and Kevin were competing in Singapore for the final cook-off. In case you missed it, Kelly was kicked off last week after she failed to wow anyone with her Asian dishes. This further makes me cringe as Tiffany should have been the one to go to Singapore.
Bias aside, last week we were left hanging as the final three were caught off guard post elimination by Padma as she called them back to the judges table after Kelly was sent packing. She and the judges announced that they each had to make a four-course meal. It must include one vegetable course, one fish course, one meat course and one dessert. Dessert is like the kiss of death on Top Chef so I am glad to see they harnessed the drama and made it mandatory. This is also where things turned sexy. Ilan Hall, Hung Huynh and Michael Voltaggio were the 3 contestants sous chefs. I missed me some Voltaggio.
Enter Angelo’s conveniently timed sickness. I am not going to say I think he was faking because I have no proof other than the oddities that were conveyed. He claimed to have a migraine and bouts of vomiting and even muttered half convincingly “But can I cook though?” It was reminiscent of my days of fakery “But can I go to school? I don’t want to miss the calculus test. *Cough, Cough*” Alas, I could be wrong.
This left Angelos’ sous, Hung Huynh, to create and execute Angelos’ final meal. Obviously this isn’t Top Sous Chef so it was pretty much obvious Angelo was out. Ed followed with a dessert breakdown. He and Ilan failed to work as a unit and he started to let his attitude cloud his abilities. This pretty much left Kevin and Michael only having to get along and crank out something that edible.
At judges table, Gail had returned to her Top Chef judging duties. Angelo was well enough to stand and hear critiques about his (Hung’s) food. The winner for Top Chef Season 7 is Kevin Sbraga! Angelo will return to his mail order Russian bride without the win.
Gail’s Top Chef: Just Desserts premiered following the finale. I didn’t get to watch, so your thoughts on the show would be great. A reunion show will reveal that Ed was bummed he drew Ilan for a sous and Kevin also didn’t want to work with him.
