New Music Friday – Christina Perri

At just 23, Christina Perri has already lived a handful of lives. She’s toured the world as an assistant to a rock band, spent a year at a prestigious university, became a wife and then an ex-wife, produced popular music videos, made olive oil in Italy and even served as a fashionista barrista in Beverly Hills. The whole while, music had been tapping her on the shoulder, trying to lead her down a path as a musician. It seems that fate grew tired of this shoulder-tapping approach as well and went for an old fashioned sucker punch.

On June 30th, a raw, defiant break-up song that Perri had written called “Jar of Hearts” aired on Fox’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance‘ as a backdrop to a memorable piece choreographed by Stacey Tookey. The song struck a chord with viewers, who began downloading it from iTunes in droves, sending “Jar of Hearts” into the Top 10 on the iTunes Pop chart and into the Top 15 on the Overall chart overnight. Impressed, SYTYCD’s producers invited Perri to play the song live on the show two weeks later.

Following Perri’s stripped-down piano performance on July 15th, “Jar of Hearts” continued its meteoric rise. After landing at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at No. 1 on Amazon’s digital singles chart, the track sold 200,000 downloads in three weeks. Suddenly a hot property, Perri signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and is in the studio finishing up her debut album, with an eye toward a late fall release.

“While all of this was happening, I barely slept,” Perri says, “because I was afraid it was just a dream; that I’d wake up and none of it would be real. One minute I didn’t exist in the music world and the next minute I did. It has been so unbelievable.”

Though she’s a newcomer to the pop charts, Perri has actually been preparing for this moment since she was a child. The daughter of hairdressers (whom she describes as “not musical, though my mom can whistle in many octaves and both my parents play the accordion”), Perri first sang in public at her Holy Communion at age six. Piano lessons began at age 8, followed by musical theater from age 11. At 9, her piano teacher “fired” her (as she puts it), because “I would change the endings to all the songs because I didn’t like the way they were written. I liked my version better.” Perri picked up a guitar and taught herself to play from watching VHS tapes of Blind Melon (whose guitarist, Christopher Thorn, recently sent her a congratulatory email via MySpace).

Perri was in London working as a gofer for her brother’s band Silvertide when she got word that she had been accepted to Philadelphia’s prestigious University of the Arts with a sizeable scholarship. She attended for a year, but took a leave of absence to visit her father’s extensive family in Italy. “I was 19 and I needed to soul search,” she says. “I was still writing music, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life.” She spent the summer learning how to make olive oil and wine, living with seventeen different family members in seventeen different cities.

Still searching, Perri moved to Los Angeles with a suitcase and a guitar. “I didn’t know anyone,” she says. “I did a lot of crying and a lot of songwriting.” On her fourth day in Los Angeles, Perri met a guy, and, carried away with the romance of it, eloped four months later. The couple launched a production company and Perri worked as its executive producer, creating music videos and commercials. She was 22. “In theory, it all sounds perfect,” she admits. “I had the house, the job, the dogs. It was the coolest life ever, but it was somebody else’s life.”

Perri and her husband split and she decided to recommit herself to being a singer and a songwriter. “I locked myself in the house and wrote music,” she says. She also posted YouTube videos of herself performing her own songs, as well as covers, and shared her struggles in her uniquely humorous way. A video of one of her original compositions, “Tragedy,” caught the attention of Bill Silva Management (which represents Jason Mraz, James Morrison, and others), who signed on to represent her.

And so began Perri’s charmed odyssey.

Perri feels that “Jar of Hearts” has connected because, “on a basic level, everyone has had this experience with a person who broke their heart. I’m just telling my story in a very real and direct way. This kind of slapped the crap out of everyone’s hearts,” she says with a laugh.

The songs Perri is recording for her debut album are all about love. She excels at setting dark, tumultuous emotions to stunning, pretty melodies, something Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette excelled at back in the day. “I would love to bring that back for a younger generation,” Perri says. “I had them to listen to when I was young, but girls today don’t really have their Fiona or Alanis. And writing about love and heartbreak is just who I am. I’ve tried so hard to write about other things, but ultimately this is what comes out of me. I have zero capability to do anything that is inauthentic to who I am.”

Green River Ordinance – Hollywood Dame Exclusive Interview

Last week, we featured “Green River Ordinance” (GRO) and their video for their song “Come On.” (Read about that here.) Hailing from Fort Worth, TX and consisting of members Josh Jenkins, Geoff Ice, Denton Hunker, Josh Wilkerson, and Jamey Ice, GRO’s debut release for Virgin Records, “Out of My Hands,” was released in February and garnered them comparisons to Matchbox 20, Augustana, and The Fray. “Out of My Hands” peaked at #10 on the Billboard “Heatseekers” chart with their single “Come On” reaching #19 Billboard’s “Adult Top 40″ late in 2009. Several of their songs have been featured on shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “MTV’s The Hills.” Recently, GRO took a couple minutes to answer some questions about their music, families, and interests. You can find those answers below – Enjoy!

Have you always felt comfortable performing in front of a crowd, or did that take some getting used to?

I think it probably took some time for all of us to get used to. It’s pretty wild playing in front of even a couple hundred people. Lately we’ve been on tours where we are playing in front of a few thousand people and it’s been amazing!

What is the hardest part of traveling?

The hardest part about traveling as much as we do is probably the schedule. When you’re playing radio shows on the same day as shows or waking up to do Good Morning Memphis, you don’t get much sleep. We also drive ourselves so we end up driving a good portion of the drives at night.

How would you describe your music?

If Tom Petty and U2 had a man-child and it grew up in Texas during the 90’s

What does it feel like to be out somewhere and get recognized by your fans?

It’s pretty amazing feeling! We’ve had that happen a few times and it’s really humbling to think that people are out there listening to music that we wrote in a garage.

Who would you say your most influential musical influences have been and why?

Well we all listen to completely different types of music. Denton grew up listening to gospel and jazz, Josh grew up singing old country songs, etc. We do love those influential bands like Tom Petty and U2 though. We actually adopted Tom Petty’s saying “Don’t bore us; get to the chorus” when we were writing songs for our last record.

Besides music, what are some of your interests? What do you feel makes your band different from other bands in the genre?

We’re total nerds…Geoff and I like video games, Geoff reads tons of sci-fi books, and Josh is a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan. I think what might make us different is that we just have fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re very hands on as far as business goes, but when we’re writing and playing we just have fun. Also, we love meeting new people. If we can ever do a meet-and-greet or have the opportunity to go over to the merchandise table after a show, we’re doin’ it.

What are your hopes as a band for the upcoming year?

We’re just hoping to continue touring like mad and play all over the place. If we’re lucky enough, we could tour overseas. That would be amazing!

What direction are you heading towards?

Where no man has ever been before

How does your newest album differ from the ones you released in the past?

For this album we actually had time to write and time to record. The previous albums have been very quick. We had 1 day to record 1 song in the past. That’s pretty hard to do and you rarely have time to experiment. That being the case, I think we’d all agree that this CD is more mature than some of the older songs.

Do you have any pre-gig or post-gig rituals?

Josh warms up with a yodeling vocal warm up that’s pretty funny to listen to. Other than that, we don’t really have a ritual yet. I’m hoping that in 2010 everyone hops on my idea to all play with our Tamagotchi’s for one hour before we play.

How supportive were your parents of your decision to want to become musicians?

Our parents have been insanely supportive of our band. When we told them that we were going to drop out of college and tour full-time, they said that they’d be behind us. I’m assuming that our experience with that conversation was pretty polar opposite from most of those conversations that occur. They said that they’d give us a year to get signed, which was our goal. It took us a year and a half or so, but they were behind us the whole time and they still are. Needless to say, we’ve got cool parents.

Special thanks to Green River for taking the time to chat with us.

Green River Ordinance’s Video For ‘Come On’

“Green River Ordinance” (GRO) is a 5-piece pop/rock band hailing from Fort Worth, TX. Their name refers to Green River Ordinances, laws which prohibit door-to-door sales unless the house’s owner gives permission to do so. GRO is not like other bands on the rise. Negativity isn’t their thing so you won’t find stories on them about trashing hotel rooms or being arrested for living a drug-crazed life. Shaped by frontman Josh Jenkins, along with bassist Geoff Ice, drummer Denton Hunker, and guitarists Josh Wilkerson and Jamey Ice, the band recorded its first EP in a church basement. They supported its release with a grassroots campaign, selling over 20,000 copies between their two independent releases, which led to shows alongside the likes of Bowling For Soup, Blue October, Simple Plan, and Mutemath. Their debut release for Virgin Records, “Out of My Hands,” was released in February and garnered them comparisons to Matchbox 20, Augustana, and The Fray. “Out of My Hands” peaked at #10 on the Billboard “Heatseekers” chart with their single “Come On” reaching #19 Billboard’s “Adult Top 40″ late in 2009. Several of their songs have been featured on shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “MTV’s The Hills.”

This song will shortly be added to my iPod and will be stuck on repeat for hours on end. Great song! You can watch their video “Come On” above, then head on over to iTunes to pick up their album.

Nick Jonas Girlfriend is 21 Year Old Courtney Galiano – PHOTOS

A rumor that a 21 year old was dating the youngest Jonas Brother has proven to be true. (Click here for that original story of Nick Jonas Seduced by a 21 Year Old).

After doing a bit of digging, photos of Nick Jonas and Courtney Galiano dating and enjoying a Kings of Leon concert in Toronto were found. Fellow concert goers reported they were holding hands and getting cuddly during the show. Galiano was a former Knicks City Dancer turned “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant. The story goes that Nick met her on the set of “Camp Rock 2.”

She is now a part of the Jonas entourage and had an overnight adventure with him and his brothers. They stayed in separate inns, but took a carriage ride together while in Ontario. Galiano also scored a spot in the new Jonas Brother video, “Bounce.”

Nick Jonas Seduced by 21 Year Old

courtney-galiano-picNick Jonas Purity Ring -4

Uh oh Ladies! Could Miley Cyrus‘ back up plan falling for an older woman? Kinda looks that way after a weekend getaway for Nick Jonas and his family. The brothers stayed at one bed and breakfast, while Kevin’s fiance Danielle Deleasa and gal-pal Courtney Galiano (from “So You Think You Can Dance?“) were shipped off to stay at another.

When Kevin and Danielle snuck off for a little alone time together for a horse and buggy ride around town, apparently so did Nick and Courtney. They took off in their own horse and buggy and enjoyed each other’s company. She is older than Kevin, yet going after the youngest of the three. So should we start taking bets on how long before the purity ring comes flying off?

New Music Friday – Adele

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known professionally as just Adele, is an English singer who describes her musical style as “heartbroken soul.” She began singing at the age of 4 when she became obsessed with voices, an obsession that she says is still ongoing. Some of her influences includes Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, who she says she stumbled upon on accident while a teenager looking through cds in a local record store.

Adele wrote her first record, “Hometown Glory” when she was only 16 years old. During her teenage years she recorded a demo and gave it to her friend who eventually put it on MySpace where it became very successful. Adele then got a record deal through MySpace, but at first didn’t believe it was real because the only record company she knew was Virgin Records. In 2007, Adele was awarded with the first ever Brit Awards Critics’ Choice Award. She then later signed to independent music label XL Recordings, which in January 2008 released her second single “Chasing Pavements.” The singer has said that the song was written after a night on the town with her ex-boyfriend, who she realized wasn’t worth pursuing anymore.

At the Grammy nomination concert last December, the Jonas Brothers told MTV News that they were big fans of her music. Adele, who performed at the Grammys with country act Sugarland, was up for four awards and won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award in addition to being named the Best New Artist. Her album was certified as Gold in February 2009 by the Recording Industry Association of America selling over 230,000 copies in the United States during the first quarter of 2009, ranking it fourth among international artists. Her first single, “Hometown Glory” has been re-released as her fourth, and latest, single. It has been widely featured on United Kingdom and United States television shows including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “One Tree Hill.” Adele wrote the song in 10 minutes after her mother tried to persuade her to leave her home town of West Norwood in London for college. You can watch the video for the song above.

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ with No Panties – Photo and Video

Remeber Janet Jackson’s Nipplegate at the Super Bowl in 2004? Well, you are going to have a new memory to share with the grandchildren. It’s The Great Vagina Sighting of ’09.

[So You Think You Can Dance No Panties Crotch Flash Video - NSFW]

Apparently there is some show on before ‘Glee’ called ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ I have never really watched this show. There has never really been any reason for me to watch this show. But all of a sudden, my email box was flooded with emails from various pervs and the guys I list as “good friends” asking why I haven’t posted anything on the ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ no panties shot from last week’s episode.

Oh, the boys and the noonie. It’s like they’ve never been to Dairy Queen and suddenly someone has handed them an Oreo Blizzard free of charge.

Fox, the channel that airs ‘So You Think You Saw My Noonie’, is of course denying that the crotch shot took place. They even went so far as to release the following statement to TMZ:

“It is a crease in the young lady’s panties.”

Look Fox, I have seen both noonie and panty creases…and this looks like neither. I am pretty sure that is a roast beef.

Quotables:

Hecklerspray: “She demonstrated to the judges and viewers that she had either a) forgotten to wear any knickers, b) was wearing the world’s most chronically inoperative pair of knickers or c) invested in a pair of knickers designed to look exactly like her own bare vagina.

OMG Blog: “First a f**k on Saturday Night Live and now a ladyflower on SYTYCD. What next? I can only hope it involves a shocking d**k-slip from Ed Westwick.”

Katie Holmes on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ – Video

In a pre-taped and pre-recorded performance, Katie Holmes does her best to impress with a version “Get Happy” originally owned by Judy Garland. She was on “So You Think You Can Dance” to pimp her new charity called The Dizzy Feet Foundation. The goal is to help underprivileged kids to experience the art of dance.

Wait…she is helping poor children with the gift of dance? Who is she aiming to help…Oliver Twist perhaps? Those kids are malnourished, but damn they can dance!

Quoteables”

Yeeeah - “Belting out Judy Garland in a pair of fishnets surrounded by sweaty gyrating mens sounds less like a foray into charity and more like Tom Cruise’s wet dream magically come to life. ”

So You Think You Can Dance Breast Cancer Dance – Video

In a touching and well put together dance, two of the contestants from “So You Think You Can Dance” convey the story of a woman with breast cancer. Melissa and Ade danced to the choreography of Tyce DiOrio and the song was called “This Woman’s Work.” It was a lovely piece.

The SYTYCD will also be celebrating their 100th show featuring Katie Holmes who will be dancing.
